Not every rescue story follows a straight line.

Possum was adopted from NFSAW earlier this year, and like every dog we place, we hoped it would be forever. Unfortunately, her family recently made the difficult decision to return her after realizing they simply weren't the right fit. It wasn't the happy ending we wanted for her, and today the cheerful puppy we once knew is understandably frightened and unsure of the world around her.

At just one year old, Possum is a gentle Golden Retriever/Dachshund mix with a beautiful golden coat, soulful amber eyes, and absolutely not a mean bone in her body. Right now she's overwhelmed, timid, and trying to figure out why her world changed so suddenly. New people and new surroundings are scary for her, and she's taking life one cautious step at a time.

But beneath that uncertainty is still the sweet little Georgia girl we first met. We catch little glimpses of her-the soft eyes, the gentle spirit, the quiet hope that maybe the next person who reaches for her hand won't let go.

Possum doesn't need someone looking for the life of the party. She needs someone willing to let trust grow at her pace. Someone who understands that healing isn't measured in days, but in tiny victories: a hesitant tail wag, a sigh of contentment, choosing to sit beside you instead of hiding across the room.

We believe that dog is still in there. She just needs someone patient enough to help her find herself again.
