Emilio - Chihuahua Dog for Adoption in Savannah, Georgia

Emilio came to us from a home where the owner could no longer care for the animals. If there is a typical male chihuahua, that's Emilio. At first, he will be terrified of everyone and may even be a little nippy when cornered - until he realizes that no harm is intended. Then, he is a happy little guy that greets everyone with a tail wag, a sniff and maybe a lick on the hand. He cowers and runs when a stranger tries to pick him up. Things for a potential adopter:

- He will need a lot longer to adjust than most dogs - just be patient with him. Expect the run and hide behavior for quite a while until he gets used to his new settings. Even then, he prefers to go to a safe place and allow you to pick him up rather than to just come to you. And trust us, that might take months! For this reason, he is a HIGH FLIGHT RISK! Make sure doors are closed and be careful when opening that he doesn't slip out.

- He does bark when a new person approaches

- In his foster home, he has been pretty well mannered with his potty habits. He usually goes to the door when he want to go outside and has shown few marking behaviors. He does wear a belly band in the house, but most of the time it is clean and dry.

-Seems to like kids who approach him calmly. Compatible with other dogs (there are three of varying size in his foster home), but haven't tried cats.

Emilio can be a picky eater. He likes his kibble plain, with just a squirt of some bone broth and maybe a little salmon oil. He also won't eat if you give him too much or watch him eat - 1/2 cup of kibble twice a day is all he wants. Emilio prefers to sleep and cuddle with his foster, but will sleep in his own bed if you insist. He's been pretty skittish (chihuahua, duh!) so has not yet been tried on walks and leash training- that is a work in process. He self entertains with toys and re-arranging his dog bed and likes to sit in the chair with his person.

Emilio is not the dog for you if you want an instant bond - trust takes time! But once you earn his trust, Emilio is fiercely devoted to his person and the most affectionate boy!
