My name is Royal and I am a 6-year-old 10lb Chihuahua looking for a very patient and understanding home.
I am currently very uncomfortable with human handling and need time to learn that people are safe. If I feel pushed past my comfort zone, especially if someone attempts to pick me up, restrain me, or continue handling me when I am asking for space, I may bite. This is a serious behavior that my adopter will need to understand and manage.
My comfort zone is currently small, so my new family will need to be prepared to build trust slowly rather than expect immediate affection or handling. Learning my body language, respecting my warnings, using positive-reinforcement training, and allowing me to make choices will be important. Progress may take considerable time, and there is no guarantee that I will ever enjoy being handled the way a typical Chihuahua might.
I do enjoy other dogs and will happily curl up on a dog bed with a canine companion. A calm, confident dog may be a good addition to my home.
Because of my fear and bite risk, I need a quiet, low-traffic home. An adult-only home is preferred, or children must be old enough to consistently understand and respect my boundaries. I am not appropriate for a busy household or a family looking for a dog who will immediately tolerate being picked up and cuddled.
I need an adopter who is comfortable with the work involved in helping a fearful dog build trust and who understands that my boundaries will need to be respected for the rest of my life. If you are looking for an easy dog, I am not the right fit. If you have the patience and experience to give me the time I need, I deserve the chance to find that person.
