Betty Jo would like a word.
Actually, several.
Preferably at bedtime, with her foster grandma, an attentive audience, and the possibility of snacks.
This squatty little American Bully mama has officially retired from the baby-making business and entered her new profession as household gremlin, evening storyteller, and self-appointed supervisor of absolutely everything.
Betty Jo’s story didn’t begin with laughter.
She was intercepted at the front door of Chicago Animal Care & Control after arriving with complications from a C-section performed at home. A serious infection had taken hold, and thankfully, we reached her in time. She underwent immediate surgery, received the medical care she desperately needed, and began a whole new chapter.
What a chapter it’s become!
She’s got opinions. She’s got an audience. She’s got an entire household in stitches every evening with her ridiculous little grumbles, gargles, and highly sophisticated gremlin vocabulary.
Her foster grandma is her favorite conversation partner, although we’re not entirely convinced Grandma gets much opportunity to respond.
Betty Jo has important matters to discuss.
Who’s sleeping where? Are snacks being served? Is there room for one more cuddle? And why, exactly, are we still awake if nobody is handing out treats?
She shares her home with cats, dogs, and, as far as she’s concerned, a whole kingdom of tiny garden gnomes living in the yard.
It’s a busy life for a retired mama.
Betty Jo is funny without trying, affectionate on her own wonderfully bossy terms, and absolutely overflowing with the kind of personality that makes a house feel alive.
There’s something especially beautiful about watching a dog who once needed urgent medical care become so comfortable, so secure, and so wonderfully outspoken.
She has a voice now, and she intends to use it.
Betty Jo isn’t looking for a complicated future. She’s already done the hard work. She’s ready for soft beds, excellent company, a little outdoor supervision of the garden gnomes, and a family who appreciates a woman with stories to tell.
Her baby making days are behind her.
Her best stories are still ahead.
