BROWNIE is a brand new 2 year old surrender whose family can no longer keep him due to work schedules and availability to give him the attention and exercise he needs. He's a super sweet dog who's a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog and we are getting him fully vetted. We're not ready to say NO other dogs at this point, but he does have some resource guarding reported that we'll need to see how manageable it is. So far he's been good (but humpy, but his neuter is scheduled soon!) with other dogs, though. He's a friendly, happy dog and seems to like to choose a person who is his main focus. We'll report back more as we get more feedback from his foster. His main concern with resource guarding seems to be about food - he did bite his previous owner (no broken skin, but bruising) as they reached down to adjust his food bowl as he was eating. No skin was broken, but a bite did happen. So far we've been careful with feeding and around food and been able to manage that guarding. Because of that. we are saying no young kids at all, though, since it can be hard to manage young ones with food around their dog. He's a big boy - his neuter and vaccines are scheduled but our best guess is he's at least 80 lbs of love.
Adoption fee INCLUDES: all vetting to age (including deworming, flea & tick etc), spay/neuter and microchip (if the dog is under 6 months, alter and chip will occur after they're 6 months, covered in full at our clinic or reimbursed partially at a vet of your choosing). If the dog is older than 6 months and not yet altered, we will schedule ASAP (normally within 30 days) at our clinic . We also provide as an incentive a $60 rebate for completion of positive-based training classes. Adoption also includes lifetime support of the rescue.
Please fill out an APPLICATION here for consideration: www.secondhanddogerscue.com/apply (copy and paste link into browser window if link is not active in your browser) - be sure to select the dog name at the beginning of the application to expedite your application.
We do most application processing virtually and dog meets will be individually by appointment with ONLY APPROVED APPLICANTS. We are not a shelter and are completely volunteer foster-based, so there is no central place to come see all of the dogs available.
IMPORTANT NOTES: ** Housetraining with rescues is sometimes a work in progress and even if a dog is 100% in a foster's home, it should be expected there will be an adjustment period as a dog adapts to a new environment. This is even more true if the dog has not by chance had their altering appointment at time of adoption. ** Also, we highly recommend some form of 2-week shutdown and decompression for dogs going to a new home for best results. --> Lastly, breed guesses in rescue are just that (GUESSES!!) 99.9% of the time. We do not do DNA testing and our breed guesses are based on appearance and sometimes other traits, but we know the dog breed guessing game is a fool's errand even for those with LOTS of experience.
PLEASE NOTE: If a dog is listed as Adoptable, he or she is still available at that time. Also, our adoption area is within a several hour radius of us in Rochester, NY (Canada within 3 hours IS allowed, except that young puppies need to be old enough to have gotten their rabies vaccination to cross the border - usually around 16 weeks)
