Meet Blue!
Blue is an approximately 3-year-old beagle mix with a gentle soul who is looking for a patient, understanding family willing to help him discover what it means to be loved.
Blue's story is a sad one, but we are determined to help him write a happier next chapter. He was originally intended to be a hunting dog, but when it became apparent that he was too frightened by gunfire to hunt, he was no longer considered useful for that purpose. Rather than becoming a beloved family companion, Blue spent much of the last two years living in a hunting box with very little human interaction.
As a result, Blue is timid and nervous around people, especially when they are standing or moving toward him. His previous owner reported that she was unable to pet him because he was simply too fearful. However, now that he is in foster care, we are already seeing encouraging signs. Blue is actually the more attention-seeking of the pair and clearly wants affection. While he is still nervous when people are standing, once his foster sits down, he can't seem to get enough pets and attention. It's clear that beneath his fear is a dog who desperately wants human connection but is still learning how to trust.
Blue is not currently leash trained or housetrained, which is not surprising given his limited life experiences. Fortunately, his foster home is helping him begin learning these important skills. We expect that with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement, he will continue to make progress.
Blue is neutered, heartworm negative, and weighs approximately 16.8 pounds. He will be microchipped, vaccinated, fecal tested, and started on monthly flea, tick, and heartworm prevention before traveling to Seattle.
Blue shares a special bond with his friend Belle. Their similar experiences as discarded hunting dogs have made them inseparable, and they will need to be adopted together. The two were housed in the same kennel and continue to be wonderful companions for one another. They love to play together and seem to find comfort and confidence in each other's company.
Blue will need a beagle-savvy family that understands shy and fearful dogs. A securely fenced yard is required, although it's worth noting that during the limited time he spent outside the hunting boxes, he showed no signs of attempting to escape his previous owner's 4-foot chain-link fence. We believe he would also benefit from having a confident resident dog in the home to help show both him and Belle that people can be trusted and that family life is something to enjoy.
Because Blue needs continued socialization and time to build confidence around people, we believe he would do best in a quieter home with older children, ideally ages 12 and up, who can respect his need for space and move at his pace.
Both dogs are currently in a foster home in St. Louis, where they are beginning to experience life as cherished companions rather than kennel dogs.
Blue's journey is just beginning, and every day brings new opportunities for him to learn that the world can be a safe and loving place. As he settles into foster care and gains new experiences, we will continue to update his profile. For now, what Blue needs most is a patient heart, a gentle hand, and a family willing to celebrate every small victory along the way.
Could you be the person who helps Blue discover that people can be trusted and that he is finally home?
Please note: Our rescue is foster-based and cannot hold dogs for future adoption due to travel, home renovations, or schedule changes. Adopters must be prepared to welcome their new companion within a reasonable timeframe.
We do our best to ensure every dog is as healthy and prepared as possible, but we ask adopters to understand that rescue dogs may need time to decompress and adjust. They are not perfect they are simply in need of patience, understanding, and a second chance.
