Cupid is a young male Staffy mix with a loyalty so deep and so fierce it borders on devotion. His people — the ones he has decided are his — are worshipped. Adored. Shown up for completely. He is warm and affectionate and genuinely silly once he is comfortable, the kind of dog who makes you feel like the most important person in any room because as far as he is concerned, you are.

Strangers are a different equation. Cupid did not come pre-loaded with universal affection for everyone he meets, and he is not pretending otherwise. He is selective, he is watchful, and when it comes to people he does not know he takes his time. With the right handling, the right environment, and experienced humans who understand that stranger wariness rooted in guarding instincts is a workable behavior and not a character flaw, he is making genuine progress. He is not a finished dog. He is a dog worth finishing.

He is dog friendly and playful, takes redirection well when his excitement gets ahead of him, and is potty trained. Tug of war is his sport of choice and he plays it with full commitment. He loves a good chew toy, knows what he likes, and will make his preferences known. His leash manners are a work in progress, which puts him in good company with most dogs his age.

Cupid needs an experienced owner — someone who understands powerful, loyal, guardian-leaning breeds and knows how to advocate for a dog like him properly. He should not live with children at this time. What he needs is a person or people who are not intimidated by a dog with edges, who will put in the training time, and who understand that the love waiting on the other side of that work is the kind that does not waver.

Adoption is $275, which includes spay/neuter at our vet, vaccines, dewormer, microchip, and clean bill of health. Although we work to potty train all of our dogs, we cannot guarantee full house training before adoption. Regression is a normal part of transitioning to a new home.
