Avalon, also known as Avi and Lady, is a sweet talkative girl with a tragic past, who loves to play, relies on her brother, and likes other cats.
Sweet girl
O Avalon will walk by you and meow softly for pats. She loves to be petted and to have her head scratched. She’ll purr softly for you when you pet and scratch her.
O Once she knows you, Avalon will headbutt your legs and wind around them when she comes to you.
O Avalon is not a lap cat, but she does like her people. She’s just a bit of a diva and wants to come to you, to call to you, instead of waiting for you to come to her.
Talkative
O Avalon is a talker. She will tell you clearly what she wants.
O Avalon mews softly when she wants attention, waiting nearby for pats. Avalon gives a louder meow when she wants treats. She likes to eat treats in her den, so she’ll meow, then when she sees you have the treat bag, dart into her den and wait.
O Avalon also sometimes chirps or trills. She chitters at birds when she sees them through the window.
Tragic past
O Avalon’s mother was killed by a coyote in when she was around 7 weeks old. It took me four or five days to catch her and her siblings after I found out. So Avalon knows that bad things can happen to good cats and is a bit shyer with strangers and strange places than most cats.
O Avalon has largely recovered from the trauma of her past, but she’s probably always going to be a one or two person cat, only really interested in her chosen people, who feed her, spend time with her, and pet her. She will need patience and lots of quiet time with her new people to adjust to them.
O While she is a bit shyer than most cats, Avalon is not very shy. When strangers come in the house, she doesn’t hide immediately. You can look at her in the kitten room, and she’s fine with that. She will usually hide when strangers come into her room for the first time, especially if they’re sitting in the wrong place. But the second time they come in, she won’t hide, and she will accept treats from people she doesn’t know well if she’s in a place where she feels secure, like her favorite hammock in the cat tree.
Loves to Play
O Avalon loves to play by herself, with her brother, and with teasers. She happily chases balls and mice, plays chase and wrestles with her brother, and bops at teasers.
O Currently, her favorite teaser is a long feather on a stick, which she likes so much she won’t just bop at it and chase it. She’ll catch it and carry it off to enjoy by herself.
O If you throw a ball or mouse for her, Avalon will race after it. She’s especially excited by bouncy balls that move in ways she doesn’t expect.
Relies on Brother
O A delicate lady, Avalon relies on her brother Lyonesse to show her what’s safe and what she should do. She often copies him. If her brother sits with you, she’ll come sit with you too—or walk around you asking for pats and scratches while sometimes headbutting your legs.
O Avalon learns quickly from watching her brother. He saw me feeding an adult cat a treat outside the kitten room one day and demanded his share. Two days later, Avalon came up to the glass door to ask for her share too. Now, when the adult cat gets her treat, both Avalon and Lyonesse rush to the door for theirs.
O Avalon often sits and relaxes near her brother. When it’s colder, they snuggle. When it’s hotter, they just sit on the same cat tree or chair.
Likes Other Cats
O Avalon likes other cats. She was born in a feral cat colony and learned the cat code first, people second. The only time I’ve seen her hiss at another cat was when the younger kittens wanted to bite her tail or when her brother gets too rough when wrestling. I’ve never seen her hiss at an adult cat. She comes up to greet them and try to befriend them instead.
O Avalon will probably befriend any cats you have before she’s completely comfortable with you. She will defer to them. Even my oldest adult cat, who doesn’t like kittens, usually doesn’t hiss at Avalon.
O Avalon doesn’t just snuggle with her siblings. She’s snuggled up to every other kitten she’s met. She would probably snuggle with her foster’s adult cats too, but doesn’t get as much time with them. She does hurry over to see the adult cats when they come near the glass door of the kitten room though.
Not a Solo Cat
O Avalon is not a solo cat. She needs a buddy. Avalon has never been alone, without other cats, and she wouldn’t like it at all. She is a copy cat and needs another cat to show her what’s safe.
O It would be best if Avalon could be adopted with her fluffy brother Lyonesse. She relies on him. He shows her what to do.
O However, Avalon could manage with another confident cat to copy as a buddy. It would just take much longer and much more patience for Avalon to adjust without her brother to lead the way. She would be much shyer in her new home without him.
Meet
O You can meet Avalon on Saturdays from 12 to 4 at Meoowz adoption event at the Buena Park Petco or at her foster’s home by arrangement. Contact Carol by email at zanzimer@yahoo.com or by text or phone at 951-317-1736 to arrange a visit. It might be better to meet Avalon at Petco, even though she’ll be extra shy there, because she’ll be easier to meet in a smaller space.
