Meet Bart, a sporty young gentleman who has traded street life for the good life!
Bart is approximately 2 years old.
Bart came to Alley Cat Project as a stray with an unknown past, but it is clear that he was well socialized to people earlier in his life.
He is a domestic shorthair black-and-white tuxedo with a sturdy, muscular build and a left ear tip that he wears like a badge of honor. Bart has a big, goofy personality wrapped up in a very handsome tuxedo. He is confident, playful, and incredibly devoted to people. He is vocal if he thinks hes missing out on the action, and genuinely gets lonely without his people around.
His favorite activities include being petted and groomed, lying at your feet, chasing toys with kitten-like enthusiasm, following his favorite people from room to room, and supervising whatever youre doing. Whether youre reading, working at your computer, or relaxing on the couch, Bart believes your life is simply better when hes part of it. He loves treats, interactive wand toys, and simple human companionship.
Having had a hard time finding food in his past life, Bart is very food motivated, which also makes him quite responsive to training. He pays attention to people and responds well to verbal redirection. For example, like many cats, he enjoys sinking his claws into fabric, but when provided with both vertical and horizontal scratching surfaces, he readily responds to reminders about where those claws belong.
Bart didnt have an easy start. He was rescued from a feral cat colony (though he is not feral) with a severe neck abscess that had gone untreated for months, along with many scars and a poor coat. Like many abandoned cats forced to survive outdoors, he learned to defend himself and compete with other cats, which resulted in some injuries to his health. Once he finally received the veterinary care he needed, however, the tough street cat blossomed into a sturdy, healthy, wonderfully social cat.
Despite having access to a secure catio in his foster home, he has absolutely no interest in returning to outdoor life. Bart has already decided that indoor living—with soft beds, full food bowls, and people to love—is exactly where he belongs.
Bart is FIV positive. With regular veterinary care and an indoor-only lifestyle, FIV+ cats can live long, healthy lives. You can learn more about FIV at fivcats.com (FIV is unrelated to FeLV). Current research shows that FIV+ and FIV- cats can safely live together when there is no serious fighting. (Bart is negative for FeLV.)
His history of survival mentality has shaped his relationships with other cats. After having to compete with other cats for food, territory, and safety, he can still be competitive with them. For that reason, we believe Barts easiest and most predictable placement would be as the only cat in his home, where he can happily soak up all the attention.
That does not necessarily mean Bart can never have a feline friend. He lived among other cats in his former colony, and he is now neutered and living a very different life. With an experienced, cat-savvy adopter, a compatible cat, and a very slow and careful introduction, he may be able to form a successful relationship with another cat. A home with another FIV+ cat could potentially be considered on that basis. His adopter should understand, however, that compatibility cant be guaranteed and introductions should be handled very carefully.
What Bart is looking for in a home:
- He has lots of young cat energy and will benefit from plenty of active play time.
- He needs to live indoors only.
- He has no known history with dogs.
- He has no known history with children.
- He prefers to be the only pet in the house
- He is FIV positive. Please consult with your vet about pairing with an existing cat, otherwise he could also be paired with another FIV+ cat or be an only cat.
All Alley Cat Projects cats are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated prior to adoption.
Alley Cat Project adoption fees are:
- $200 per cat or kitten
- $350 for pair of cats or kittens
- $50 for senior cat (over 8 years old)
- Flexible reduced fees for a cat with a chronic medical condition that requires ongoing care
- Adjustable fee upon request for adopters who are low income, and seniors, disabled, or others with fixed incomes.
- Additional charitable donations are appreciated and support our overall rescue efforts
