Meet Dellwood!
Dellwood is a handsome 6.5-year-old domestic long-hair tuxedo with a heart every bit as big as his fluffy cheeks.
His story started when one of our team members was helping care for a colony in a backyard. The homeowner was feeding a mama cat and her kittens and was convinced the beautiful long-haired tuxedo she kept seeing was the mom of one of the litters.
We smiled and said, That's definitely not mama...look at those tomcat cheeks!
Like so many colonies, there was a lot more going on than anyone realized. Cats come and go, some stay hidden, and there's almost always a bigger story happening in the background.
Over the next few weeks, we trapped the younger kittens, their mom, another teenage kitty that had quietly joined the group...and finally, Dellwood.
When the drop trap fell, we walked up expecting a typical feral tomcat. Instead, Dellwood just sat there looking at us.
We looked at each other and said, I wonder if he's friendly...
Sure enough, he was.
Now, don't get us wrong. He was nervous. He'd give a little hiss when you reached toward him, but it was more of an automatic response than anything aggressive. He has never been mean. He simply needed time to learn that people could be trusted.
And once he started trusting us...what a wonderful cat he turned out to be.
Dellwood has become one of the best caregivers in his colony. When another cat is nervous, he's right there beside them. He gives them confidence, comfort, and reassurance. Watching him with the other cats has been incredibly special. Hes just a steady, gentle soul.
Dellwood would love a quiet home with people who understand that some cats just need a little extra time to settle in. Once he feels safe, his sweet personality shines through.
If one of his colony friends happened to go home with him, we'd absolutely love that. He enjoys having feline companions and really seems to thrive when another cat is around. If that's not possible, we'd love for him to have another friendly cat waiting for him at home.
Recently, Dellwood treated himself to a little spa day. He had a dental with a few extractions and is feeling so much better. He also has a little scar on one eye from an old infection, but it doesn't bother him one bit.
Like many former tomcats, Dellwood is FIV positive.
The good news? FIV-positive cats can live long, happy, healthy lives with routine veterinary care and good nutrition. They also live safely alongside FIV-negative cats in most households. We'd be happy to answer any questions you have about FIV. We love helping people learn more about these amazing cats.
We think Dellwood has spent enough time taking care of everyone else.
Now its his turn to have someone take care of him.
