Meet A.C., a brave racing industry survivor less than one year old. While named after the place he was found–an air conditioning unit–we believe that A.C. truly stands for avis caelestis, Latin for “heavenly bird.” His tale is one of strength and stoicism.
Volunteer Ren writes, “It was late at night and I was in the area so I went to see if there was any chance A.C. was still there after a kind member of the public mentioned a bird sitting on the large air conditioning vent outside the building. I went assuming he would no longer be there, having found somewhere safer to hide, but when I arrived there he was. Puffed up and terrified sitting in the middle of the giant vent. I wonder if maybe he had hit the side of the building because he had some swelling in one eye and bruising on his keel. Made me wonder if he landed on the vent and was too tired, scared, and in pain to move.”
Many of our rescues are survivors of the pigeon racing industry. These birds are totally dependent on humans for survival and in return are treated as entertainment and a commodity. Homing pigeons like A.C. are taken hundreds of miles away from home, and fly high at great speeds to “race” back home. Many of them don’t make it. They get attacked by predators during their journey, collide into buildings, get lost, or are culled for underperformance or subpar genes.
A.C. is one of the fortunate birds who is being given a second chance at life. His light grey plumage is akin to that of a stone statue, a reminder that his experiences, which left him so injured and weathered, forged him into the brave and stoic bird he is today. A.C.’s eyes are now filled with a warmness and hope that he will find a home full of loving humans and soft surfaces to rest.
