Meet Mazie!
Mazie has spent her entire life as a commercial breeding dog, and because of that, she doesn't yet understand what normal dog life looks like. Although sweet and gentle and never makes a peep, she is not a typical dog. She is essentially starting from scratch, learning that a home, a couch, a yard, and human companionship are safe and good things. This takes time, and it takes the right person.
After more than a month with her foster family, Mazey has made small but meaningful steps. She feels safest in the room she was first introduced to and chooses to stay in her kennel much of the time, not because she has to, but because it's the only world she's known. She can come and go freely, but stepping outside of that comfort zone is still a big ask for her. When her foster family brings her to the living room or outside, she will stay and watch everything and everyone but she is still confused and navigating a world that is completely new to her.
She does perk up around other dogs, which is a great sign, though she hasn't attempted to interact with them yet. She's a gentle, sweet girl and a good eater but she has a long road ahead.
Potential adopters should know: Mazie is not potty trained and is currently using potty pads. Because she does not yet walk on a leash, outdoor potty training will be a significant challenge and will require dedicated, patient work over a long period of time. She would love to lie in the sun outside with you, but she does need to be carried in and out.
Mazie is also currently being treated for a possible dry eye condition and a potential ocular ulcer. It is possible that she may require eye medication for the remainder of her life, though we have a follow-up veterinary visit coming soon to reevaluate and learn more. Her adopter should be comfortable with the possibility of ongoing eye care and medication management.
Mazie needs a calm, quiet home with an adopter who fully understands that her progress will be slow, and who finds that journey rewarding rather than frustrating. She is not a good fit for a busy household, young children, or anyone looking for a dog ready to jump into family life. She is, however, a beautiful soul who deserves someone willing to meet her where she is and watch her slowly, surely, discover the good life.
