Vaquita / Female / 3 Years Old / 28lbs / Terrier Mix / Good with Dogs / Untested with Kids / Good with Cats / From Mexico/ Fostered in Toronto
Vaquita (which means “little cow”) is a gentle, mild-mannered girl who has already shown incredible resilience. She came into care after being abandoned when her family moved, and it was quickly clear she was too soft-hearted to survive on her own. Since then, she has been learning what it feels like to be safe, loved, and part of a home again.
She is as sweet as they come. Calm, affectionate, and happiest when she’s close to her person. Vaquita loves going for walks (she’ll be waiting by the door the second she sees a leash), enjoys chewing on toys, and has a playful side that comes out with other dogs. She has the cutest little habits, her tail is almost always wagging, and when she meets a dog she really likes, she makes a soft, endearing “play with me” sound that’s impossible not to smile at. At home, she’s more of a cozy companion, happy to settle in for belly rubs or nap nearby.
With her people, Vaquita bonds very quickly. She’s incredibly affectionate, often coming over just to rest her head on you and soak up attention. With new people, she is friendly and eager to say hello, both to humans and dogs alike. While she hasn’t been formally tested with children, her gentle and easygoing nature suggests she would do well with respectful, dog-savvy kids.
Vaquita would thrive in a home that offers a calm, predictable routine and plenty of companionship. She’s adaptable and could do well in a variety of living environments, from a quieter suburban home to a more urban setting, as long as her physical and emotional needs are met. She would love a family who will take her on daily walks, include her in their lives, and give her the sense of security she’s been missing.
She is very social with other dogs and would happily live with a canine companion, though it’s not required. She has also lived with cats and can coexist well with them, especially if they are dog-savvy, though she may occasionally try to initiate play.
Vaquita has a lower-medium energy level and enjoys a balance of activity and relaxation. She walks beautifully on leash, is not reactive to noise or busy surroundings, and handles new environments with ease. She is fully house-trained, has excellent house manners, and can be trusted with free roam of the home, quietly waiting for her people to return.
Vaquita is also a tripod, having recently undergone a rear leg amputation, and she is adapting incredibly well. She may tire a bit more quickly, but it doesn’t slow her spirit—she still loves her walks, her people, and being part of the action. With a little understanding and a supportive routine, she will continue to thrive.
Vaquita is the kind of dog who doesn’t ask for much-love, safety, and someone to call her own. In return, she offers unwavering affection and a quiet, steady companionship that runs deep.
