DESCRIPTION

Our newest member doesn't really look like most of the other cats and kittens that we've rescued....mostly because he's a big ol' Husky Dog!

We aren't really in the business of helping to rehome dogs, but after we heard his story, met this little Pupperman, and got to spend some time with him, we simply couldn't say "No!"

And with that, we'd love to introduce you all to Akimbo, a two year old Siberian Husky with complete heterochromia (a harmless rare genetic trait that causes him to have one white and blue eye, and one brown and black eye. It doesn't affect his vision at all, and just adds to his adorably goofy look!)

Akimbo needs to be rehomed because his owner is getting married, and the new family is moving into the same house together. The wife-to-be already has an "Alpha Dog" who let it be known that the house is HIS, and Akimbo, despite being very submissive and willing to accept the other dog's status is just being bullied and tormented too much, and so his owner had to make the very difficult decision to ask us to find him a home where he can live without that stress of another dog lording over him and being a bully.

Akimbo grew up in an apartment, and since he has been with us, has been taking full advantage of our fully fenced in backyard. He is still very much a (big) baby boy, and he spent over two hours running, and diving, and sliding, and rolling around, and chasing the tennis ball, and exploring, smelling, and lounging around int he grass. He has so much energy to burn off, and having a yard is something he is hoping for in his new home, because having that "built in playground" does so much more for him than simple walks around the block. He has a blast in our yard, and now that he got to experience, we would hate to take that away from him again.

We have smaller dogs, and while we were worried about how a dog his size (about 55 pounds) would be around them, he has actually taken to them nicely, and after a gradual introduction, his passive side kicked in, and he is already following the lead of our 4 year old Bichon Frise (who is about 12 pounds), and has accepted his place in the heirarchy as "baby brother" behind the Bichon and our 12 year old Jackhuahua (who is about 9 pounds).

Akimbo is crate trained, fixed, UTD on his vaccinations, and knows basic commands like "Sit", "Stay", "Down", and "Paw" (to give high fives!). The day we met him, he was working hard to master "Leave It", and he did well even if every attempt ended in whimpering and eventual sneaking the treat he was supposed to be leaving alone as soon as he thought he wasn't being watched! Haha he is persistent, and very food motivated!

Akimbo may not quite understand why other dogs become mean or aggressive. Luckily, he hasn't learned to show that back, which is a surprise, considering his breed. He doesn't have a mean-spirited bone in his body. He's very well-behaved, even if he does get a bit excitable at times, and he definitely doesn't realize how big of a dog he is (him jumping up on the couch to cuddle is NOT the same thing as when our smaller dogs do it!)

Akimbo has had very minimal interactions with a few of our kittens. They were safely in a playpen, and he was VERY curious about them, but we didn't trust him enough to get too close. After we pulled him back and redirected him a few times, he seemed to lose interest, or completely forgot they were in the playpen still. He has not been left alone with them yet, and most likely will not be, unless he is with us long enough to truly be trusted around them.

All in all, Akimbo is a happy, hyper, playful pup who wants to be loved without judgment and live in a home where he will not fall victim to more intimidating dogs. This sweet boy has endless energy, and even more important, endless love to give. He just needs to find the perfect match!
