Lizzie is a beautiful 3-year-old, 15-pound cream-and-copper Shih Tzu whose life should have been so different.

When she came to us, Lizzie was so terribly matted that you could barely see her beautiful eyes. She had been neglected for far too long. And then came something even more frightening: a house fire. No one went back to save Lizzie. Somehow, this little dog found her own way out through the back door.

She saved herself.

What is remarkable is not just what Lizzie survived, but who she is despite it all. She is sweet, friendly and affectionate, with a gentle spirit that her past simply could not take away. Beneath all that neglected fur was this beautiful little girl, still ready to trust people and still hoping that someone will finally choose her.

At only three years old, Lizzie has so much life ahead of her. She doesn’t need anyone to feel sorry for her. She needs what she should have had all along: a family who will cherish her, keep her safe, and make sure she never has to save herself again.
