Benji is a handsome boy with all the adorable wrinkles a Shar-Pei lover could ask for! He may take a little time to warm up, but once he trusts you, his cuddly, playful personality shines through. Benji is looking for a special family who understands the Shar-Pei breed and is experienced with the needs that can come with it.

- Cuddly, affectionate, and playful once comfortable
- Enjoys going for walks
- Knows some basic commands
- House-trained, though occasional accidents may happen overnight or when left alone
- Needs time and patience to build trust with new people
- Afraid of thunderstorms and fireworks

Things to Know:

- Benji has a history of resource guarding involving food, toys, his bed, and his person. His adopter will need to understand resource guarding and be prepared to work with him safely and consistently.
- A Shar-Pei-savvy home with experience managing these behaviors is essential.

Benji has so much to offer the right person! He's looking for someone who will respect his boundaries, give him time to settle in, and help him continue building confidence. Once you earn his trust, you'll get to enjoy the cuddly, playful companion hiding behind those adorable wrinkles!

Old Dominion Humane Society (ODHS) Adoption Process
- Complete our Adoption Survey on the Adopt page of our website at https://www.olddominionhumanesociety.org/adoption-survey to expedite the process and arrange a meet-and-greet. Expect a response within about a week; please check your spam folder. As we're 100% volunteer-run, your patience is appreciated!

Requirements And Donations
- Required Adoption Day Items: A martingale collar and a non-retractable leash (available for purchase at ODHS).
- Adoption Donations: Puppies (under 1 year): $375; Adults: $275; Seniors (age-dependent): $175; Select dogs: $500. We accept cash, debit, and credit cards.
- Adoption Radius: Within 350 miles of Fredericksburg, VA. A $50 out-of-state fee applies.
- Breed Identification: Dogs are listed as "Mixed Breed" unless formal documentation is available.

Location And Hours
- Visit our adoption center at 3602 Lafayette Blvd, Fredericksburg, VA 22408 during adoption hours: Wednesday 5-7 PM; Friday 6-8 PM; and Saturday 10AM-4PM.

These dogs come from a mixture of lineages, resulting in a wide range of sizes, coat types, and temperaments. While each mixed breed dog is distinct in its own right, they are known for their resilience, adaptability, and often have fewer health issues compared to purebred dogs due to their genetic diversity. Mixed breed dogs make wonderful companions for families looking for a loyal and one-of-a-kind pet.

The Shar Pei is a distinctive breed known for their deep wrinkles and blue black tongue. Originally from China, these medium sized dogs are loyal, independent, and protective of their families. Shar Peis have a unique appearance with a hippopotamus like face and a broad, padded muzzle. Their coat can be either horse coat or brush coat, coming in a variety of colors. While they can be aloof with strangers, Shar Peis are devoted companions with a calm demeanor, making them wonderful family pets.
