DESCRIPTION

Meet Apollo, a 4-year old miniature Schnauzer mix. Apollo came to the Shelter very matted and, because of the discomfort of that, pretty defensive and unsure of interacting with new people. After a few days of decompression, staff started to see a softer, engaging side of him. Apollo got neutered and had a full body shave while he was under sedation. Although not the fanciest haircut, this clean shave will give Apollo and his next guardian(s) a fresh start so he can learn that brushing and grooming are pleasant, treat- and snuggle-filled fun! This will ensure he can get the regular grooming he needs to prevent him from becoming so matted again. Now that Apollo is feeling better, he is starting to expand his circle of human friends. Although he can be cautious at first, Apollo warms up and enjoys soft pets, going for walks and snacks. He was primarily outdoors in his previous home and the only animal in the home, so his doggie social skills are also a work in progress. Any resident dogs should meet prior to the Shelter. His previous guardian reported that he chases cats, so a feline free home is recommended. Due to Apollo’s uncertainty with new people, a home without children would be best to help provide a quiet atmosphere for Apollo to transition and learn new skills in his new home. Apollo recently spent some time in a short term home where we learned that he is likely house trained - he held his bladder until he was let outside. He slept nicely in a crate overnight. Although small, Apollo is a strong dog who pulls on leash when he wants to get somewhere. Apollo does not like being picked up and would prefer some agency and choice in his handling experiences. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them

ABOUT: MIXED BREED DOG BREED

The mixed breed dogs, often referred to as mutts, are a diverse and unique group with a blend of different characteristics from various purebred dog breeds. These dogs come from a mixture of lineages, resulting in a wide range of sizes, coat types, and temperaments. While each mixed breed dog is distinct in its own right, they are known for their resilience, adaptability, and often have fewer health issues compared to purebred dogs due to their genetic diversity. Mixed breed dogs make wonderful companions for families looking for a loyal and one-of-a-kind pet.
