Some dogs come into this world with every advantage. Denver came into it fighting simply to survive.
Almost two years ago, we took in a litter of nine newborn puppies. They had barely entered the world when tragedy struck. Their mother attacked two of the babies, and Denver suffered unimaginable injuries. The entire right side of his face was degloved, sending him into emergency surgery within hours of being born. He endured facial reconstruction before he had even opened his eyes to the world.
Because of his injuries, Denver could not nurse from a bottle. While other puppies were feeding normally, Denver had to be tube fed around the clock by a dedicated foster who refused to give up on him. He was fragile, tiny, and every day was uncertain.
But Denver chose to fight.
Against every odd stacked against him, he healed. He grew stronger. He learned to trust. He learned that hands could be gentle, beds could be soft, and people could love him. Eventually, he found what we all believed would be his forever home.
And now, through absolutely no fault of his own, Denver is back.
It is impossible to explain how heartbreaking that is for a dog who has already overcome more pain than most ever will. But Denver does not let his past define him. He is still the same resilient, loving boy who beat the odds from day one.
Denver is now 1 year and 9 months old. He is smart, potty trained, leash trained, and crate trained. He knows sit, stay, and paw, and he loves being praised for a job well done. He has some Aussie in him, so he comes with energy, intelligence, and a desire to stay active. At the end of the day, though, his favorite place is curled up beside you in bed, soaking in the comfort he once had to fight for.
Denver does not need pity. He needs permanence. He needs someone who understands that some dogs carry invisible scars, and that the greatest gift you can give them is never having to lose their home again.
He has already survived the unthinkable. Now he deserves the ending he should have had all along: a family who chooses him for life.
