Meet Banji — Our Little Miracle

Banji is just 9 months old, but this little girl has already fought harder for her life than most dogs ever will.

We rescued Banji from Devore High Kill Shelter when she was only about four months old. Almost immediately, we learned that she was positive for distemper.

We were devastated. We truly believed we might be bringing her home simply to keep her comfortable and loved for whatever time she had left. But we promised Banji we would give her every bit of supportive care our veterinarian could offer — and give her every chance to fight.

And Banji fought.

Five months later, she is still here.

She survived distemper, something far too many puppies never get the chance to do. The illness did leave Banji with some neurological damage. Her adorable little tongue often hangs out of her mouth, she experiences some jaw twitching, and she takes medication to help control seizures.

But Banji doesn’t know she’s “special needs.”

She just knows she’s Banji.

She LOVES children. She loves other dogs and would likely be just fine with cats. She loves going for walks, has plenty of puppy energy, thinks chicken is one of life’s greatest inventions, and more than anything, she simply wants to be wherever her people are.

We don’t know what Banji’s future will look like. She could have years ahead of her. There are simply no guarantees.

What we do know is that this extraordinary little dog deserves to spend however many years she has being someone’s beloved family member — not waiting for her life to begin because she’s a little different.

And perhaps the most beautiful part of her story is her name.

Banji means “one who brings joy.”

We gave that name to a tiny, very sick puppy without knowing whether she would survive.

But she did.

And she has brought us joy every single day since.

Banji has already done the hard part. She survived.

Now we’re looking for the person who will show her exactly what she survived for — and let this beautiful little girl bring all of that joy into their home.
