Pumpkin — Sweet Mama, Pug, 3 yrs old
We have had the honor of fostering this beautiful mama pug who came to us without ever really having a name of her own. We started calling her Pumpkin and Mama, and both names quickly stuck.
Mama has had a very rough start to life. She spent much of her life living in a cage and being repeatedly bred for puppies. Because of her past, we are asking her future family to give her the patience, grace, and unconditional love she deserves.
In just four short weeks, Pumpkin has made incredible progress. She is already about 90% potty trained and is smart as a whip! As long as you do your part and take her outside regularly, she does her part too.
Pumpkin has chosen me as her “person,” and when this girl loves you, she LOVES you. She follows me everywhere and wants nothing more than to be close. I have no doubt that once she feels safe with her new person, she will form that same incredible bond with them.
One of the sweetest things has been watching her discover how to simply be a dog. She absolutely loves her foster dog siblings, and I honestly don't think she had ever been given the opportunity to play with other dogs before. Now, playing is one of her favorite things!
She is also discovering treats for the first time—and peanut butter was definitely a huge hit! She doesn't beg for food and actually seems confused when she sees my dogs gathered around my feet while I'm eating. She has zero food aggression and takes treats incredibly gently. She isn't a big eater and sometimes prefers to eat when nobody is watching, which may be another behavior connected to her past. She's also been spoiled with farm-fresh eggs mixed into her breakfast, and her beautiful coat is starting to grow back.
There are still pieces of her past that show. We believe Pumpkin may have experienced abuse. If someone approaches her too quickly or reaches toward her suddenly, she may crouch down and occasionally urinate out of fear. She is also very fearful of men. Her new family will need to understand that trust cannot be rushed. Sitting quietly on the floor and allowing Pumpkin to come to you on her own terms works wonders.
But kids? She LOVES them! She and my young children absolutely adore one another. We have seen no aggression toward children, other dogs, or around food.
After everything this girl has been through, I would love nothing more than to see Pumpkin become someone's PRINCESS.
While she does wonderfully with dogs and children, I think her dream home would be with someone—possibly an older couple—who has plenty of time to give her attention, patience, treats, and lots of snuggles in bed.
