Special Needs: Blind
Mr. Money here, on the hunt for a cozy, fuzzy blanket and a loving family to spend my golden years with! I may be 11 years young, but don't let my age fool you. I still love going on walks, exploring the world around me, and soaking up all the love and attention I can get. Oh, and did I mention I'm blind? Don't worry, I don't let that slow me down one bit!
Now, let me tell you a little more about myself!
While I can't see, I've become pretty good at using my other senses to navigate the world. I rely on sounds, smells, and touch to help me get around. For example, I know that when my paws feel grass, it's time to go potty! I also recognize my name, listen to basic verbal directions, and use my body to carefully feel my way around a room. I'm a smart little guy who just needs a little time to learn my surroundings.
During the day, my foster dad works from home, and he says I'm the best coworker he could ask for! I don't demand much attention and am perfectly content snoozing in my cozy dog bed or crate while he works. At night, I happily settle into my crate and sleep peacefully until morning. I'm a pretty easygoing roommate, if I do say so myself!
I currently share my foster home with two other dogs, and we get along just fine! I've also encountered other dogs while out on walks, but honestly, I'm much more interested in getting pets from the humans than making new dog friends. I haven't met any children yet, but my foster family thinks I could do well with older, respectful kids who understand that it's important to say my name before touching me so I don't get startled.
When it comes to stairs, I can manage about two steps to get in and out of the house, but anything more than that means I'll need a little help. Luckily, I love being picked up! My foster family currently lives in an upper-level condo, and they've simply blocked off the stairs to keep me safe. It hasn't been an issue at all!
A Few Tips for Living With a Blind Dog Like Me
Being blind doesn't mean I can't live a happy, fulfilling life! I just need a few small accommodations to help me feel safe and confident in my surroundings. My foster family has learned a few tricks that have made things easier for all of us.
• Consistency is key! Keeping furniture in the same place helps me memorize the layout of my home. When I first arrived, my foster family started by introducing me to just the kitchen so I could get comfortable before exploring more of the house. Slow and steady works best for me!
• I love having my own space! My crate and puppy playpen are my safe places. In fact, I love them so much that my foster family upgraded to larger ones so I have plenty of room to move around while still feeling secure.
• Talk to me before touching me! Since I can't see you coming, saying my name before petting or picking me up helps me know you're there. Once I know it's you, I'm all about the cuddles! And yes, I absolutely love being picked up.
• A little sound goes a long way! My foster family discovered that a pet water fountain is a great way to help me locate my water bowl. I can follow the sound of the running water to find a drink! The best part? You can find one on Amazon for around $20.
• I'm a professional snuggler and napper! One of my favorite things is having my back against something sturdy, whether that's the couch, my cozy bed, or even your side. Once I feel safe and comfortable, I'll happily drift off into a peaceful nap.
My Perfect Forever Home
I'm not looking for anything fancy. Just a patient, loving family who understands that I experience the world a little differently. Give me a predictable routine, a safe place to rest, a few enjoyable walks, and plenty of love, and I'll be one happy little guy.
I may not be able to see your face, but I'll recognize your voice, know your scent, and feel every bit of the love you give me.
So, what do you say? Do you have a fuzzy blanket and a little extra room in your heart for an old guy like me?
