Location: -Wayside's Canine Behavior Center - I'd love to show off all the cool things I've learned at Wayside! Please arrive at the shelter before 4pm on our open adoption days to meet me!
My Friends at Wayside say:
-I’m a shy dog and need someone willing to be patient with me.
-I was in a foster home, so I was able to work on my housetraining. My foster said I was doing well!
-My foster said I do a good job of sleeping through the night.
-Once I warm up to you, I like to be petted.
-I am eligible for a Slumber Pawty, a 7-10 day in-home trial period. Please visit our website for additional information.
-I am enrolled in Confidence College. This is a program for dogs to build confidence and learn that the world is not so scary. My adoption comes with a free 30-minute private training session.
My home needs are:
-I need a home without other dogs - I prefer having your attention all to myself!
-A fenced yard is a must for me! I do not know how to walk on a leash, so I need a secure area to go out for potty breaks.
-I need a home with kids 6 years old and older since I tend to be nervous around new people and loud noises.
-For my safety, I need to go home on an anti-slip collar called a martingale collar. For your convenience, we sell them in our retail store, Whiskers and Wags.
-No apartments or shared living spaces for me, please! I like to use my voice when I am excited
This dog is from a puppy mill situation. They will likely need time to adjust to home life. They have lived with many other dogs but have not experienced socialization with people and things like walking on a leash and doorways are challenging for many of them. Dogs from puppy mills can be difficult to housetrain, and adopters should be willing to be patient during this process. Crate training can be very helpful and also give the dog a safe place to call their own. It is also important to let them go at their own pace with building a relationship with their new family and limiting lots of commotion and visitors in the beginning is wise. They have not experienced life outside of the puppy mill, so things could be overwhelming for them at first. Patience and positive interactions are crucial. Aversive methods of training should be avoided. Puppy mill dogs are almost always treat motivated, so using that to build trust and teach new things is the way to go! Adopting a puppy mill dog can be extremely rewarding and the extra time needed to allow them to learn about life and love will be paid back in time!
Hi there, I’m Calvin...
I’m a 5-year-old Miniature Poodle with a quiet heart and a soft soul. Coming from a puppy mill, the big wide world is still pretty new to me, so I’m working on building up my confidence every single day. Because I have a lot of catching up to do when it comes to life experience, I’m looking for a special, patient human who will go at my pace and help me feel safe.
Since I’m still learning the ropes, I do have a couple of important must-haves for my future home! I need to be your one and only dog so I can focus entirely on my own journey without feeling overwhelmed. I also require a securely fenced yard where I can explore, sniff, and stretch my legs safely while I get comfortable in my new routines.
While I tend to be a pretty independent guy who likes having my own space, don't let my shy exterior fool you. Once I truly warm up to my people and learn that I can trust you, I actually really enjoy gentle pets and affection! It just takes a little extra time and understanding to unlock that side of me. If you’re ready to give a sweet, deserving boy the gentle second chance he needs, I’d love to meet you.
Love, Calvin
