Melvin - An Old Soul, a Gentle Heart, and So Much Love Left to Give
Melvin
Male | 10 Years Old | Poodle/Mixed Breed
Professional Cuddler | Blanket Sucker | Certified Good Boy
Some dogs come into rescue needing a fresh start, and some remind us just how much a little kindness can change a life. Meet Melvin, a sweet senior gentleman who is ready to spend his golden years being loved the way he always deserved.
When Melvin came to us from animal control after being surrendered by his owners, he was in heartbreaking condition. His coat was severely matted, and he was covered in fleas. But after a much-needed grooming session and some time to decompress in a loving foster home, this handsome boy has started showing everyone the precious soul hiding underneath all that neglect.
And what a sweetheart he is!
Melvin loves couch cuddles, following his favorite person around the house, and sleeping beside them at night. He's a wonderful walking buddy who walks beautifully on a leash, and he enjoys the company of other dogs. But toys? Oh, those are his FAVORITE! He also has the sweetest little habit of sucking on blankets for comfort. We don't know what his past looked like, but if a cozy blanket helps him feel safe, we hope his future is filled with all the soft blankets his heart desires.
He's comfortable in a kennel, although he hasn't needed one in his foster home. He's been doing well with potty training, with some marking that his foster has been working on while he was still unneutered.
Melvin has also recently had his neuter and dental cleaning, and we're happy to report that he did well! He had one retained testicle, a condition called cryptorchidism, which required an additional incision on his abdomen for removal. His veterinarian also found prostate changes that were likely contributing to blood in his urine. The good news is that neutering should help his enlarged prostate shrink over time.
We do want to be transparent about Melvin's health. He has a grade 4 out of 6 heart murmur, which means he will need a family who understands that he may develop heart-related complications in the future. The timeline is uncertain; problems could develop soon or may not arise for years. His adopter should be prepared to work with their veterinarian to monitor his heart and address any future medical needs.
Despite everything his little body has been through, Melvin is resting comfortably and recovering with pain medication and antibiotics. Now he deserves a chance to enjoy the good life.
Melvin's dream home:
A family who appreciates the sweetness of a senior dog.
Cozy couches, soft blankets, and plenty of snuggle time.
Walks, toys, and people to follow around the house.
Other friendly dogs are welcome.
A family prepared to monitor his health and give him the care he needs as he ages.
Melvin isn't asking for much. He doesn't need a perfect life or an elaborate adventure. He just wants a soft place to land, a person to love, and the security of knowing he's finally home.
After everything he's been through, we would love nothing more than to see this gentle boy spend his golden years surrounded by comfort, kindness, and unconditional love.
Senior dogs have so much love left to give. Could you be the person who makes Melvin's next chapter his very best one yet?
