Dexter is a 9-month-old bully-type dog who has recently been returned to our care after being adopted as a young puppy. He was a much-loved companion in his home, but ultimately needed more structure and guidance than they were able to provide. The decision to return him was made in his best interest-and also for the safety of livestock, as Dexter began to show a strong interest in chasing cattle.
Dexter has lived his life as an outside dog up to this point, so he is still learning what it means to be part of a home and has very limited household manners. That said, his heart is in the right place. He is incredibly sweet-natured, affectionate, and genuinely enjoys being around people. He soaks up attention and is happiest when he has someone to lean on.
He has done well with other dogs, cats, and children, making him a versatile companion in the right environment. The livestock chasing behavior appears to be less about aggression and more about a young, intelligent dog who was bored and looking for stimulation.
Dexter is a bit unsure of himself right now, and returning to the shelter after being in a home was understandably stressful for him. He can be a little nervous as he adjusts, but underneath that uncertainty is a loyal, loving dog who wants to feel safe and connected again.
With consistency, structure, and a patient adopter willing to guide him, Dexter has all the potential to become a devoted and wonderful lifelong companion.
