Meet Roo!

A spirited five-and-a-half-year-old American Pitbull Terrier mix currently in Waynesville, NC, whose affectionate personality comes wrapped in a beautiful black coat with charming white accents. At 45 pounds, this medium-sized girl is an enthusiastic playmate, devoted companion, and world-class snuggler who forms wonderfully close bonds once she feels comfortable.

Roo may take a little time to warm up to new people, but patience is rewarded with abundant affection! She loves staying close to her favorite people, riding in the car, playing tug, and settling in for serious cuddle time. She has medium energy and enjoys regular walks, play sessions, and a consistent daily rhythm. She completed a seven-week basic obedience course and knows commands including sit, stay, leave it, lay down, and off! Positive reinforcement works beautifully for this clever girl, and continuing her training can be a rewarding way to strengthen your connection.

Roo had a difficult start before she was found as a stray. A rope had become embedded in her neck, requiring surgical removal and leaving a large scar, and she later spent time in three shelters. While we cannot know how these experiences affected her, they may provide some context for her sensitivity and fear in certain situations.

Roo needs an adult-only home without children. She can become anxious around children and unfamiliar people and has reacted by growling and lunging. Although her four known incidents with people did not break skin, her new family should understand her signals, respect her boundaries, and provide thoughtful behavior support. She currently takes Prozac to help manage her anxiety.

Her prey drive is high, so Roo needs a home without cats or small animals and requires a securely fenced yard. With other dogs, Roo is genuinely social and playful off leash and has enjoyed both dog parks and doggy daycare. On leash, however, she can become uncomfortable during encounters with other dogs and may respond by growling, showing her teeth, or lunging. Another compatible dog may be possible, but introductions should be carefully managed, preferably off leash in an appropriate, secure setting where Roo can feel comfortable.

Roo is spayed, microchipped, house-trained, crate-trained, and up to date on vaccinations. She would thrive with experienced, active adults who can offer structure, consistency, affection, and plenty of opportunities to play. A quieter setting with room to safely explore could suit her wonderfully.
