Elfred ACCT-A-232260 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Elfred must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by MONDAY, OCTOBER 13TH at 10AM. Should Elfred's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Elfred was found wandering with a broken leash and brought to ACCT Philly on September 18th. He was friendly with his finder and walked well on leash. Elfred is energetic, social, and full of love-he's the kind of dog who greets every person like an old friend and can turn any ordinary moment into playtime. He enjoys toys, especially stuffed ones, and is eager to please. Volunteers describe him as playful, affectionate, and sweet, with gentle mouthiness that's easily redirected. He loves treats (especially hot dogs!) and knows "sit" and "paw." Elfred also seems housetrained and settles down nicely after a burst of play. Because of his enthusiasm, he has a "no kids" waiver, but he's shown that with structure and exercise, he's a wonderful companion for adults or families with older teens. Please bring all members of your household and any resident dogs along for a meet. Due to his length of stay, Elfred is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter.

BEHAVIOR:
On 10/8 staff noted: "Easy to leash and pulled hard. Changed him to a Weiss walkie leash wrap harness and he walked much better! Met Eddie a social media influencer, jumping a lot with an open mouth. Sat for treats, rolled on his back, found a tennis ball to chew and laid in a sploot position and also found large rocks to chew. Would drop the rocks for multiple pieces of cheese on the ground and when he dropped the rocks had to pull him away fast to not pick it back up. On the walk back he jumped on a bench and stood with loose body, ears back for pets. Easy to return to kennel."
Per volunteer 10/6: High energy. Really pulls but will sit for treats.
Per volunteer 10/4: Low-medium energy. Very sweet, potty trained! Loves pets. Pulls on leash a little.
Per volunteer 10/2: Low energy. Leash puller, loves toys.
Per volunteer 10: Medium energy. Leash puller, very sweet.
Per volunteer 9/25: Curious about other dogs. High energy, wants to run, loves to jump, played fetch.
Per volunteer 9/21: Elfred is the definition of a happy-go-lucky pup! This silly, goofy boy loves nothing more than zooming around, playing to his heart's content, and then smothering you with kisses and hugs. He's full of energy and has the biggest, silliest personality-but deep down, he thinks he's a lap dog and would love nothing more than to snuggle up close after a day of fun. If you're looking for a playful, affectionate companion who will keep you laughing, Elfred is your guy!
Per staff 9/20: Based on adoption meet -- adding no kids waiver.
Per volunteer 9/20: Elfred was really excited to come out of his kennel. He pulled hard till he got outside. He immediately peed and then pooped so he may be trying to stay house trained. He did pull pretty hard walking when we initially started, but he got significantly better as we continue to walk. He will also pull towards stuff he wants to see/smell. He has a good bit of energy and can be jumpy/excitable at times, he knows sit and paw will try to jump up to give you kisses. Likes to play with stuffed toys in the play yard. He would collect the toys because he couldn't decide which was his favorite. He also put his paws on my lap for pets. Allowed all over handling. He would likely do well in a home that can provide him with exercise and enrichment while continuing to manage his good boy skills.
Per staff 9/20: Such a friendly boy, puppy energy in big body! Easy to leash, super excited coming out of the kennel! Once leashed he came out wanting to give immediate love and ran, pulling hard to go outside. Peed immediately so he's trying to stay housebroken. Once he came inside he was like a bull in a china shop, immediately running to the adopters with a wiggly body and jumping into their laps. He would take treats quickly and then slightly mouth and or lick the adopters hands and forearms once they were gone. Running all around the meet and greet room and loves to chew and chase balls. Since he was so intense with the adopters I would have to pull him back on the leash to try to tame his intensity and a few times he would leash bite and play with the leash but easy to redirect onto a ball or rope toy. When I redirected him onto the rope toy he went for it fast and barely got my hand. definitely recommend no kids since it was a lot for adults let alone a kid.
Per staff 9/20:
Kennel Presentation: Elfred had a wagging tail, loose body and neutral eyes at the front. He backed away from the leash seeming a bit hesitant but allowed easy leashing.
Leash Skills: Pulls moderately, he came right out and was bouncy and friendly. He was greeting everyone with a loose body.
Sociability: Elfred sniffed around curiously in the yard. I called him over to me and he ran over with a wagging tail and open mouth to give me face kisses. He was super sweet, taking treats gently (hot dogs) and giving me more kisses. He knows sit and jumped right back on my lap. He began playing and gets mouthy (very gentle). he likes to run around with you although he calms down quickly and mellows out. He was super affectionate with another handler that entered the yard.
Play: Engaged in play.
Return to Kennel: He walked back into kennel.
Color Level: Gold.
Per volunteer 9/19: High energy. Loves rope toys + pets. Very strong, pulls a bit on leash. Tiny bit hesitant getting leashed.
Per staff 9/19, playgroup: Steerable with water, good greetings, nervous, plopping down, tolerant, shut down, handler-oriented.
Per staff 9/18: Very friendly, loves cream cheese.
Per finder 9/18: Wandering dog with a broken leash. Friendly with strangers. Walks well on leash. Slobbery. Friendly, mouthy.
MEDICAL:
On 10/6, Elfred tested negative for pneumovirus, but he was still showing signs of a URI with concern for infectious pneumonia. He was prescribed enrofloxacin. He is scheduled to finish doxycycline on 10/9 and enrofloxacin on 10/20.
Per staff 10/4: Coughing tonight during meds, seemed BAR other than the coughing. Doesn't get meds at night but I offered him a hotdog and he ate it right away.
On 9/26, Elfred was in the same row as a dog that tested positive for parvovirus. Test results indicated that he has antibodies for parvovirus, which means he has good protection from the virus.
On 9/26, Elfred was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" and started on doxycycline. He tested positive for pneumovirus.
During his intake exam on 9/18, Elfred's eyes were red due to being tied up and he had live fleas. His ears were clean and his teeth were white. He was an intact male in good body condition, weighing 54.2 lbs.
