DESCRIPTION

Meet Thumbelina ACCT-A-255986! Thumbelina is a 10-year-old female who was brought in by police on 7/18. Police noted that she was "friendly." Thumbelina has quickly become a staff favorite as she has been extremely friendly with people despite this in the shelter thus far, and has leaned into all handling offered! Every person stops to say hi when they see her and if they don't, she'll put her paw through the baby gate to remind them who is in charge.

In foster care, she's shown to be housetrained, and ok when left alone for several hours, choosing to just take a nap. She an easygoing on walks and rides well in the car too! Not only that, she was extremely tolerant for a much needed bath when she arrived. So what's Thumbelina's ideal home? Someone who will love her, who will pet her a lot (belly rubs are the way to her heart!). She would be happy in a home with one person, or an entire family (more hands to pet her with!). Her ideal home is looking for a chill and relaxed dog, not a running partner as those years are behind her. A nice stroll is more her style. Her ideal home would also have a few bully sticks for her to chew, as it's a favorite hobby of hers. She's shared her foster home with a foster kitten, and after careful and slow introductions, is very tolerant with him, but any introductions to resident cats should be done slowly to set them up for success. She does need to be the only dog in the home, but on walks is easily distracted and walks by them without issue even when they are only ten feet away.

Medically, she did have mammary tumors when she arrived but those have been removed and sent out for biopsy, and it is anticipated they will be benign. She would benefit from a dental as well, but still has no problem chowing down. She was thought to be deaf, however she can hear sometimes, so while her hearing isn't great, it also appears to be selective.

Thumbelina has really flourished in foster care and is hoping to find her forever family or a rescue to help her find a forever family soon. Because Thumbelina is in foster care with a staff member, you can meet her at the shelter Sundays - Thursday between 10am-5pm or contact her foster!

Videos

Thumbelina & Tink:
https://youtu.be/_ztn4HknyKI

Tense body and hard barking at the fence. Did a walk along, kept looking away. Able to get within about a foot of each other and Thumbelina was able to sniff Tink. Was tense when face to face again.

BEHAVIORAL:

7/30 Per staff/office foster: Has been wonderful in the office and at home, doesn't get into anything and is ok left alone. Is extremely housetrained, not a single accident. She just loves to be pet, and is just miss social with every person who walks by. She does get reactive toward dogs walking by while in my office, jumping at the baby gate and snarling. When on walks around my apartment, dogs have walked by, and she often doesn't seem to see them, as she'll be sniffing the grass or something similar. If she sees them, her ears prick up and she pulls a bit, and I pull her back a bit and she's quite easy to redirect. she jumps into the car on her own without issue, and rides well.

Per staff 7/20 Is not deaf. Very selective about listening but heard dog barking next door and then I called her name and she turned to me

Per staff on 7/19:

"Kennel Presentation: Laying on the bed when I approached. Soft eyes, ears to the side and tail down not moving.

Leash Skills: Easy to leash and stumbled coming out of the kennel. ( older gal may need assistance) Minimally pulls on the leash.

Sociability: Leaned into all handling with soft eyes, ears to the side and mid tail down. Went up and sat at the fence when a volunteer came up. Did not eat any treat I offered.

Play: n/a

Dog Interaction: Tense and hard barked at the fence with tink. Parallel walked with Tink, started at about 5 feet able to move to about 1 foot away from each other. Bart would look and look away. She was able to sniff Tink, however kept moving further away if Tink was behind her. Tense with face to face and did not push the interaction.

Return to Kennel: Needed leash pressure to go back into kennel. Remove leash with hand

Color Level: Blue"
MEDICAL:

7/30 Two large mammary masses removed - left 3rd and left 5th mammary glands, submitted for biopsy. Both masses were cystic.

Per her exam on 7/19, Thumbelina was BAR (bright, alert and responsive) and a Body Condition Score (BCS): of 6/9. She has severe debris in her ear and severely worn dentition. She has a large mammary mass associated with a left mammary chain, and multiple small mammary masses palpated within mammary chain.

Per her intake exam on 7/18, Thumbelina was in overall decent condition, but with stained & chipped teeth, and waxy ears.

ABOUT: MIXED BREED DOG BREED

The mixed breed dogs, often referred to as mutts, are a diverse and unique group with a blend of different characteristics from various purebred dog breeds. These dogs come from a mixture of lineages, resulting in a wide range of sizes, coat types, and temperaments. While each mixed breed dog is distinct in its own right, they are known for their resilience, adaptability, and often have fewer health issues compared to purebred dogs due to their genetic diversity. Mixed breed dogs make wonderful companions for families looking for a loyal and one-of-a-kind pet.
