Athena - Mixed Breed Dog for Adoption in Mesa, Arizona

Athena came from a hoarding situation where she had never experienced the inside of a home. She had never even been given a name. So it's no wonder that trusting humans has been a difficult lesson.

Her foster mom has never rushed her. Athena has been allowed to move at her pace, and slowly, the walls of distrust have started to crumble.

After about a week, Athena barked at the wind. It meant she was beginning to feel like she had a place worth protecting.

Now she takes food and treats from her foster mom's hand--a tiny crack in those walls of fear.

She knows her name and will often come when she's called--a sign that she is beginning to trust the voice calling her.

Athena gets along beautifully with the other dogs in her foster home, but she has a special bond with her foster brother, Princeton. He has helped show her the ropes and taught her that this strange new world isn't so scary after all.

Athena could thrive as an only dog, or with another calm, confident dog who can help her transition, give her reassurance, and show her the way.

She was named Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and strength, because of the wisdom and strength we believed she carried after everything she had endured.

She appears to be a Chihuahua/Jack Russell Terrier mix, and her road to confidence will likely be a long one with bumps along the way.

But when we look at how far she has already come, those bumps are becoming fewer and farther between.

And if we look closely, we can almost see it...

A smooth road stretching out before her. ✨
