Grits - Mixed Breed Dog for Adoption in East Montpelier, Vermont

Grits came to CVHS when his family lost housing, and had not found a place to live with dogs. His "sibling" joined us first, and she has already found a new home!

Grits is a very enthusiastic, high energy dog, and would love a new home that can keep him active, and do lots of fun activities with him to keep his brain and his body busy. He's three years old, but his joy of life makes him seem like an eager one year old, and his prior owner described his personality as that of a teenage boy; we agree!!

Grits has lived with both men and women, children over 6 years old, dogs of all sizes, cats, and other small animals. He behaves very poorly around chickens, and can be annoying to cats, so it might be best for cats not to adopt him. When meeting dogs, he comes on very strong, and many dogs find that rude and react strongly to him, so we are working on calmer greetings with him. He doesn't have much spatial awareness, and when he gets excited around kids, he sometimes knocks them over.

He loves to play fetch and tug, and is happy with active walks (with leash and harness), and zoomies around our fenced-in yards. His previous owner said he has no recall, and if he is let off leash he will smile at you and take off running. We are working with him on improving all his manners, and he loves force-free training.
