Meet Howie
He spent his first year surviving. Now Howie is ready to discover how wonderful it is to be someones beloved dog.
Howie is a handsome 1-year-old Labrador Retriever/German Shepherd mix who has come a long way from his difficult start. He and his littermates were found roaming on their own in Arkansas, malnourished and full of worms. Today, Howie is healthy, happy, and discovering the joys of being a house dog—and he is ready for a family of his very own.
Howie is a sweet, gentle, affectionate boy who can be a little shy when faced with something new. Give him a little time, patience, and encouragement, and you will see his confidence grow. Once he feels comfortable, his playful and goofy personality shines through.
Why you'll love Howie
Housebroken! Howie has never soiled his foster home or his crate. He understands that the house is where you live, relax, and snuggle—not where you potty!
Dog-friendly: Howie loves other dogs and is wonderfully easygoing with canine friends. He enjoys their company and can learn a lot from a confident dog.
A lovely leash walker: He walks nicely without pulling and enjoys exploring the world at his own pace.
Crate trained: Howie is very comfortable in his crate and happily goes in when it's time to eat or settle down.
Eager to learn: Howie already knows several cues, including sit, down, "easy," touch, and spin. He's food motivated and enjoys figuring out what his people are asking him to do.
Handling superstar: Nail trims, ear cleaning, brushing—you name it. Howie takes grooming and handling like a champ.
Playful but easygoing: He enjoys toys, sticks, backyard time, and walks, but he's also perfectly happy to hang out and relax with his people.
Howies perfect family
Howie is looking for patient, kind adopters who will continue building his confidence and showing him all the good things life has to offer.
He would likely do especially well with another friendly, confident dog who can help show him the ropes. He doesn't need someone to "fix" him. He needs someone who understands that a young dog who had a rough beginning may need a little extra time to feel safe and confident in new situations.
And here's the really rewarding part: you get to watch Howie discover the world. Every new experience, every new trick, every moment of choosing to come closer is a little victory.
