HUEBUCK — From Terrified to Thriving
On July 30, Huebuck was sitting in a shelter on the euthanasia list.
At about 7 years old, this sweet black-and-tan hound mix had clearly been through some hard times. He was painfully thin, had significant skin issues, and his teeth were worn down, perhaps from chewing on whatever he could find while trying to survive as a stray.
And he was scared.
So scared, in fact, that when it was finally time to leave the shelter, Huebuck wouldn’t walk out on a leash. He had to be carried to freedom.
But that frightened, skinny dog is not the Huebuck we see today.
Huebuck now weighs about 48 pounds, his skin has cleared up, and he looks wonderful. More importantly, he has learned that he is safe.
He’s gained confidence and loves hanging out in the backyard, but what Huebuck loves most is simply being close to his person. He’ll climb right into your lap, give you kisses, and look at you with those deep, soulful eyes that seem to tell you just how grateful he is to be loved.
Huebuck is a wonderfully sweet, calm, laid-back and easygoing boy. He’s completely dog-friendly and will happily run and play with another dog, but he’s just as content relaxing beside you with a good bone.
He’s also a smart boy! Huebuck is potty trained and crate trained, knows sit and shake, loves car rides, and is wonderful at the vet.
There is still one little piece of his past that he’s working through. Huebuck can be nervous about walking away from his house. Once he gets beyond the driveway, his confidence grows. It’s almost as though he’s worried that leaving his safe place might mean he isn’t coming back.
And who could blame him?
After whatever happened during those years before he was rescued, home means something very special to Huebuck.
He hasn’t lived with children in his foster home, so we can’t say for certain how he would do with them, but his foster describes him as gentle, affectionate and easygoing.
Huebuck isn’t looking for anything complicated. He wants a safe home, a comfortable place to sleep, maybe a canine buddy to play with, some bones to chew—and most of all, a person of his own to love.
He survived being a stray.
He survived neglect.
He survived the euthanasia list.
Now Huebuck deserves the one thing he has probably never had before:
A home where he never has to wonder if he’s safe again. For more information please contact Celina at 615-354-3531.
