If you found it romantic when Edward watched Bella sleep, then Rickey is the boy for you.

Two-year-old Rickey has been with us for a few weeks and is currently living with a family, where he has settled in beautifully. He gets along well with everyone, but Rickey is definitely the kind of Dane who chooses his person — and once he chooses you, you’re his person.

Rickey is what we like to call a Class A stalker. He is the definition of needy — in the absolute best Great Dane way possible. If you are in the bathroom, he’s in the bathroom. Taking a shower? He’ll follow you right in. In fact, he has even tried to get into the shower with his person! Privacy is apparently not a concept Rickey recognizes.

This big boy is a true shadow. He wants nothing more than to be close to you and cuddle. Let him, and he’ll sleep right beside you — either in your bed or on his own bed next to yours. Sitting on the couch? Expect that giant head in your lap. Taking a bath? Don’t worry, Rickey will be right there to make sure you don’t slip down the drain. He is also a very vocal, talkative boy and has plenty to say when he wants your attention!

Rickey is not destructive and is very housebroken. He’ll let you know when he needs to go outside — and he won’t take “no” for an answer. He’s perfectly happy being left out in the house during the day, where he’ll snooze on the couch until you return. And thunderstorms? No problem. Rickey has absolutely no storm anxiety.

He does, however, want to be with his people. If he is put away alone in another room, he will be very unhappy and may whine for a while before settling down.

Considering how skinny Rickey was when he came to us, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that he has no food aggression. He may beg and give you those irresistible sad eyes, but he won’t snatch food from your plate or try to take it from your hand. You can even add food to his bowl while he’s eating or give him scratches while he eats, and he doesn’t mind at all.

We are labeling Rickey as not cat-friendly. He currently lives with a very large orange tabby and initially showed little interest in him. That changed when the cat tried to climb into the lap of Rickey’s person. Rickey was not having it! He became very vocal and chased the poor kitty away. Rickey can also be a little possessive of his person when others are touching or hugging them. His response is more “Excuse me, that’s MY person” than aggressive — he’ll simply wedge his enormous head between them and push them away.

Rickey has met plenty of people during his time with us and has done well with children, including toddlers, as well as other dogs, both large and small. On two separate occasions, he was initially cautious around guests who happened to be men with long beards. He tensed up and barked, but with just a little reassurance, he relaxed — and one of those men eventually found himself with Rickey sitting happily in his lap.

Rickey is a sweet, affectionate and remarkably well-behaved boy who simply wants to be loved and included in everything you do. He is heartworm negative, and whoever gets to take this big, talkative, cuddly boy home is going to be one very lucky Dane parent.

There is one thing we would definitely warn you about: Rickey is an escape artist when the front door opens. He will happily bolt out to explore the front yard — and possibly your neighbors’ yard, too! The good news? Open the car door and invite him along for a ride, and he’ll come running right back and happily jump in.

If you’re looking for a giant shadow with a giant personality, a giant heart and a whole lot to say, Rickey might just be your guy.

Rickey is neutered, vaccinated, and chipped. His adoption fee is $400. To read over the adoption requirements before applying to adopt Rickey, please go to www.nwflgdr.com/adopt.

Please note: NWFLGDR does not transport. All approved adopters are required to pick up the dog in person from the foster’s home.
