CHARCOAL PRINCESS CHAR — LOOKING FOR HER FOREVER HOME
Sometimes the most beautiful butterflies just need a little more time to emerge.
Meet Char, a beautiful 10-month-old, 46-lb (could continue to grow) black doodle who is just beginning her journey from a very sheltered life into the confident, happy girl we know she can become.
Char came to us as a breeder release, and she is unfortunately lacking the socialization that puppies need. Because of that, she is very shy and timid in new situations. But please don't mistake her quietness for aggression—Char has never been aggressive or reactive. She is simply unsure of the world and needs a patient person willing to help her discover that the world can be a wonderful place.
When Char first arrived at her foster home, she was so frightened that her fosters had to carry her quite a bit, including carrying her into the car and helping her with things like grooming appointments. She has already made progress, though! She is becoming more comfortable walking on a leash, and she especially enjoys being outside in a fenced yard, where she feels safe enough to explore at her own pace.
Her foster family is starting to see glimpses of the girl underneath that shyness. She has begun climbing into their laps, following them around outside, and seeking out affection from people she trusts. Once she knows you, Char is an absolute Velcro dog who just wants to be loved.
Char's ideal home:
A patient adopter, preferably someone with experience helping shy or undersocialized dogs
A securely fenced yard is required—this gives Char a safe place to explore and build confidence
Someone who is home more often than not and has plenty of time to devote to her
A quieter home where she can take her time coming out of her shell
Older children or no children would be preferred—not because she doesn't do well with kids, but because we're looking for a home where she can have the time, calm home, and attention she needs
Someone in good physical condition who can lift her if necessary, especially during those early weeks when she may still become frightened and "freeze"
A home with other dogs is absolutely okay! Char does well with dogs of all sizes
She is untested with cats, but we suspect she would likely be okay with proper introductions
Char is kennel trained and keeps her kennel clean, although she is still working on house training. She is incredibly smart, quiet and sweet, and once she feels comfortable with someone, she actively seeks their love and companionship.
Inside the home, she's still figuring things out. You may find her in her kennel or hiding while she takes everything in. But outside with her foster family, she is starting to show us more and more of her personality.
And then there's that gorgeous coat! Char has a beautiful nonshedding doodle coat, but her future family needs to be prepared for the commitment that comes with it. Large doodles require regular professional grooming and frequent brushing between appointments, so please be prepared for the ongoing grooming expense and maintenance.
We don't expect Char to transform overnight. Her journey will take patience, consistency and love. But every time she climbs into a lap, follows her foster outside or takes another brave step forward, we see a little more of the beautiful butterfly waiting to emerge.
Her foster family absolutely loves this sweet girl and wants nothing more than to find the person who will continue helping Char spread her wings. They know she has so much potential—and with the right family, we believe she is going to become an absolutely incredible companion.
If you think you could be the patient, loving person to help Char continue her journey, please apply at adoptapal.org/adopt.
Her adoption fee is $550 and she is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and comes with one month of pet insurance.
