Golden Retriever Dogs Available for Adoption in Benton, Louisiana

NEW INTAKE 5/8/2026: Chonk - male - 7 years old - 91.8 pounds - Golden Retriever

Reason for intake: Chonk came to us from animal control in another parish. He was an owner-surrender due to a move. They wanted to surrender their female GR as well, but when they were told there may be a risk of euthanasia (it is a municipal shelter after all with a high intake), they took her and left Chonk. (grrrr) Chonk has always lived outside. He has HUGE hanging mats all over his underside. What we thought was part of his tail (you can see in the picture)... is actually a large mat. He has baseball-sized mats hanging from his chest and from his rear end. He didn't know anything about a leash or getting in a vehicle. His poor eyes are tired. We gained his trust with some chicken as we checked him in, which he really enjoyed. His day involved lifting his 91 pound body into the Tahoe (it took two people); a 2 hour drive back to the rescue to get him checked in... then taking him to Gail, one of our board members and a lover of Goldens... where she will foster him. This morning he went to our groomer, Wendy, for a much-needed spaw day. Monday, May 11, he's heading to our vet.

Life has forever changed for this big beautiful, sweet boy. Stay tuned for his transformation!

NOT TAKING APPLICATIONS: Many dogs, particularly breeder, hoarder or senior dogs, can have multiple medical issues that need addressed. Additionally, sometimes we take in young puppies requiring multiple vaccinations and/or quarantining. In this particular case, we are not yet taking applications either due to age or possible illness or some other reason. We will post when s(he) is ready for adoption.
