HARVEY - German Shepherd Dog Dog for Adoption in Whitchurch-stouffville, Ontario

HARVEY was found stray near a high-kill shelter with no identifiers of past owner. HARVEYhas just turned a year old but has had very little socialization. HARVEY is a scared little baby who will need a VERY experienced German Shepherd owner/family.
HARVEY will require positive and gentle learning about the World not being that scary, when you can look to your experienced and calm person. HARVEY needs a slow approach to new people and new situations.
We have been working with him and he is extremely smart and very quick to inderstand. It is about teaching him he has choices, rather than bark at scary things, he can look to his person who tells him he is fine, changes to direction of the walk and hands a delicious treat to him for choosing to check in with his person.
The shelter was a scary place and he was on the euthanasia list surrounded by other frightened dogs, so he is reactive to them. He uses a big loud bark to scare them away. He does however try to ignore them first and hide.
HARVEY is so gentle and sweet. He would flourish in a home with teen children or older and as the only pet. He is not a candidate for dog parks. He needs to feel his owner has got this, so he can become more confident and be part of a Team.
