This 8-year-old male German Shepherd is a neutered gentleman who has come a long way since arriving in our care. He initially came in extremely emaciated and terrified, but with time, patience, and consistent care, he has truly blossomed into a goofy, affectionate, and people-loving boy who is now seeking his next step: a calm, stable foster or foster-to-adopt home.
He is currently heartworm positive and will begin treatment on May 12th, with his first injection scheduled for before June 12th. Because heartworm treatment can be physically and emotionally stressful—especially in a shelter environment—we are strongly seeking placement into foster care prior to treatment if at all possible. Foster-to-adopt is also welcomed, with finalization available after his last injection (approx. 2-month process total).
This boy is now very people-friendly and has learned that humans are safe and kind. He is affectionate, playful, and often goofy—leaning into people, nudging for attention, and happily engaging once he trusts you. He is extremely food motivated and very responsive to positive interaction.
He has shown excellent resource tolerance with people. Staff have been able to safely handle his food bowl while eating without issue, and he has tolerated removal of high-value items such as rawhide. Initially, he gave polite warning sounds when a valued item was taken, but over time he has shown improvement and attempts to disengage rather than escalate, demonstrating respectful communication and learning boundaries.
Behaviorally, he appears to prefer being an only dog. Based on his responses and likely lack of early socialization (or possible negative past experiences), he would do best in a home without other companion animals where he can decompress and build confidence without pressure.
He seems to be fully house trained and maintains clean kennel habits.
Overall, he is a deeply rewarding dog who has gone from fearful and shut down to affectionate and playful. He is now ready for a home that can continue his healing journey through structure, calm leadership, and patience.
Ideal placement:
•Foster or foster-to-adopt starting ASAP (prior to 6/12 preferred)
•Calm, dog-free home
•Adult-focused or low-traffic environment preferred
•Someone experienced or patient with large breed shepherds
•Willingness to support him through heartworm treatment (clinic guidance provided). Cost will be covered by the shelter.
This is a truly special dog who has already overcome so much—getting him out of the shelter during treatment would make a significant difference in his recovery and long-term success.
