Meet Canela — From Fearful to Fearless... One Little Victory at a Time!
Canela's journey at Conroe Creature Refuge has been one of patience, trust, and some pretty incredible progress!
When she first arrived, Canela was a frightened girl who would bury or hide her face, tuck her tail, and do everything she could to avoid situations she didn't understand.
Today, that same girl actively seeks out human affection, loves physical contact, and absolutely enjoys being the center of attention!
Watching her discover that people can offer comfort, kindness, and affection has been one of the most rewarding parts of her rehabilitation.
Canela has an incredibly sweet disposition and is eager to please, especially now that she's learning what is expected of her. She's food and treat motivated, making positive reinforcement a wonderful tool for continuing her progress.
What we've learned about Canela:
- Affectionate and actively seeks human attention and physical contact.
- Does well with dogs of all sizes, although she may need a little time with certain introductions.
- Has done well with cats.
- Has done well with children.
- Food and treat motivated and eager to learn.
- Continuing to improve her leash manners.
- Making tremendous strides in confidence and socialization.
She's come a long way, but her journey isn't finished.
Although Canela is no longer the frightened girl who constantly hid her face or tucked her tail, her instinct to flee can still surface when she's overwhelmed, startled, or faced with unfamiliar situations.
This is an important part of understanding her needs. She requires patient handling, secure leash equipment, and someone willing to help her work through challenging experiences rather than rushing or forcing her.
With consistency, reassurance, and positive experiences, she continues to show us just how capable she is.
Canela's ideal home
Canela could do wonderfully in an active household or an apartment with regular walks, enrichment, and opportunities for positive socialization.
What matters most isn't the size of the home but the patience, understanding, and commitment of the people sharing it with her.
She deserves someone who will continue building on the foundation she's worked so hard to establish. Someone who understands that progress isn't always linear and that even the bravest little hearts sometimes need reassurance.
Canela has already learned that human hands can offer love instead of fear. Now she needs someone who will help her believe the rest of the world can be just as kind.
She's affectionate, resilient, eager to please, and has so much love waiting for the right person or family.
Could you be Canela's next chapter?
