MEET VELMA — TOYS, BELLY RUBS & A WHOLE LOT OF LOVE
Hi, I’m Velma! I’m estimated to be about two years old, weigh around 21 pounds, and I came to Freedom Frenchie Rescue from Riverside County Animal Shelter after I was found as a stray. Nobody knows exactly what my life looked like before I landed at the shelter, but everyone is pretty sure I belonged to someone at some point. I know how to live in a house, I’m potty trained, I’m great in my crate, and I definitely understand that humans are responsible for important things like treats, belly scratches, snuggles and, above all else, TOYS. I have a lot of happy, loving energy packed into this little body, and every day that I feel safer, more of it comes pouring out.
TOYS ARE BASICALLY MY ENTIRE PERSONALITY
When I say I love toys, I need you to understand that we are not talking about a casual hobby here. My day can start with a toy in my mouth and end with a toy in my mouth, with approximately 400 toy-related activities happening in between. If you let me play outside all day, I absolutely would. Catch? Yes. Chase? Absolutely. Fetch? Well, I will enthusiastically run after whatever you throw, but apparently there is some expectation that I’m supposed to bring it back to you, and I don’t remember agreeing to those terms. I’m especially looking forward to cooler weather when I can spend more time outside without my foster humans ruining all my fun with their responsible decisions about French Bulldogs and Arizona heat.
GIVE ME A MINUTE AND WATCH WHAT HAPPENS
When I first came into rescue, I was nervous, guarded, and unsure about people touching me. During those first couple of days, I could even be a little snappy because I simply didn’t know what anyone expected from me or whether I was safe. Nobody knows what happened before I arrived, so Freedom Frenchie Rescue didn't force affection or expect me to immediately trust people I had just met. They gave me space, let me watch, and allowed me to figure things out at my own pace. That was exactly what I needed, because once I realized nobody here was going to hurt me, everything started changing incredibly quickly.
THE TRUST IS BUILDING FAST
Every single day, my walls come down a little more, and underneath them is one seriously loving little girl. The trust that everyone wondered might take weeks or months to build has started developing so quickly, and once I decide you're safe, you get an entirely different Velma. I'm affectionate, silly, energetic, curious, and becoming more comfortable asking for attention instead of wondering whether I should avoid it. The girl who didn't want anyone touching her at first is quickly turning into a total love bug who genuinely wants to be close to her people, and watching that transformation has been pretty incredible.
WANT TO WIN ME OVER? IGNORE ME
One of the best ways to become my friend is actually to stop trying so hard to become my friend. Sit down on the floor, relax, and pretend I'm not there because eventually my curiosity will take over. I'll wander toward you, investigate the situation, hang around for a minute, and before you know it, the supposedly independent little dog is climbing into your lap looking for affection. Giving me the choice to come to you makes all the difference because every time I make that decision for myself and something good happens, my confidence in people grows a little stronger.
BELLY SCRATCHES WILL EXPOSE MY TRUE IDENTITY
I have this hilarious little routine where I'll come over for pets, run away, circle back, disappear behind you, and then wait to see if you'll reach around and scratch my belly. Please do, because whatever tough-girl act I was attempting immediately disappears. Once that belly rub starts, I'm yours. The more comfortable I become, the more everyone realizes that underneath my initial hesitation is a ridiculously affectionate little girl who wants to love and be loved. I don't need someone to force a relationship with me; I need someone willing to let that relationship happen naturally, because once it does, you're getting one heck of a love bug.
THE OTHER DOGS ARE BECOMING MY CREW
I live with other dogs, and as I've settled in and become more confident, I've shown just how much I enjoy having them around. I can entertain myself perfectly well, especially when I've got my toys, but I really do love the companionship of other dogs and enjoy being part of everything happening around me. I've been good at reading other dogs' energy, and while I can sometimes be protective of my precious toys, I've also allowed another dog to take one from me without turning it into a big production. As my trust and confidence continue to grow, so does my willingness to engage, relax, and simply enjoy being one of the dogs.
THERE IS A LOT GOING ON BEHIND THESE EYES
I'm incredibly observant and always paying attention to what's happening around me, even when it looks like I'm completely consumed by whatever toy happens to be in front of me. I'll sit for treats, I'll sit for a toy, I'm potty trained, and I've had zero accidents in my crate. Open my crate door and I'll walk right inside without a fight because I understand the routine. When I transition into a new environment, I may not eat normally for the first few days while I figure everything out, but once I feel safe and understand what's happening around me, I settle in beautifully.
ROAD TRIPS, BATHS & DOMESTICATED DOG PROBLEMS
I do pretty well in the car and don't mind heading out for a ride, so I'm happy to join you for adventures once we've built that relationship and I'm comfortable with you. Baths are another story because I wouldn't exactly put them on my list of life's greatest experiences, but I'll get in there and tolerate the indignity because apparently being a domesticated dog means occasionally having humans wash all the perfectly good dog smell off of you. I have accepted this unfortunate reality and will cooperate accordingly.
PLAY HARD, LOVE HARD & THEN PASS OUT
I'm still a young French Bulldog, so when I'm ready to play, I bring some serious energy to the situation. I love being silly, rolling around on chairs, scratching my back, racing around, playing with my toys, interacting with the other dogs, and making everybody laugh. Then, because I am still a Frenchie and we believe strongly in balance, I'll eventually crash and sleep like I haven't rested in six months. I could thrive with an active family that wants to play and interact with me, but I could also be happy in a calmer home because I'm really good at entertaining myself and don't need someone constantly creating activities for me.
I NEED SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS THE FIRST FEW DAYS AREN'T THE WHOLE STORY
For now, Freedom Frenchie Rescue is recommending children 12 and older because I'm still learning what life looks like when I don't have to keep my guard up, and my toy obsession can be pretty intense. My adopter needs to understand that the Velma they meet on day one may not be the Velma they have a week later. Give me decompression time, don't overwhelm me, let me learn your routine, and allow me to decide when I'm ready for affection. My foster family did exactly that, and my trust has grown incredibly quickly because they listened to what I needed instead of expecting me to immediately become the dog they wanted me to be.
SMALL GIRL, BIG PERSONALITY & AN EVEN BIGGER HEART
Despite my white and cream coat, I currently haven't shown the significant allergy issues people sometimes expect with light-colored Frenchies. I could probably stand to gain another pound or two, but otherwise I'm a compact little 21-pound girl with a huge personality and an even bigger capacity for love. I'm potty trained, crate trained, dog friendly, smart, playful, affectionate, and completely committed to making sure the toy industry remains financially stable for years to come.
YOU REALLY DON'T WANT TO MISS OUT ON THIS GIRL
I may make you earn my trust at first, but once you have it, you're going to understand exactly why everyone around me has fallen in love. There is so much happiness, affection, playfulness, and loving energy inside this little body that it almost feels like I'm making up for lost time. I love my dog friends, I'm learning how wonderful people can be, and every day I'm becoming more confident about showing everyone who I really am. Passing me by because I need a little patience in the beginning would mean missing out on the very best part—the moment I decide you're my person and all that love I've been holding onto finally belongs to you. Give me some space, a little patience, plenty of belly scratches, and an unreasonable number of toys, and I'll take it from there.
