Socialization: Dottie will greet everyone that walks in the door, even at the Vet Office! She is extremely people oriented, very friendly to every age she has met. She will try to jump up on you for love, and has to be careful with little ones in that way, but it's always a gentle "come up" to you for pets and snuggles. She has met the cat in our Vet office and really had no interest in Millie, and if she did show any curiosity she very quickly turns away if you tell her to. Dottie is in foster with many little Chihuahuas, and has met her foster larger cousins and has been nothing but great with them all. She really doesn't have much interest in them, she is more interested in greeting you for pets.
Training: Dottie is housetrained and very well behaved in the home. She will stand up at the kitchen counter if you're not looking, she's pretty smart in that she will wait for you to turn your back to her before she tries to counter surf! She is a bit slow, or maybe more uninterested in learning sit, down, off. We keep working on them:)
She really is a dream inside, for a dog that lived in a kennel all her life, and used for hunting, she has adjusted amazingly well to being inside a home. She does love the comfort of the couch or bed.
Crate trained: Dottie has no problem going in her crate at night, she is very comfortable in her own little "spot" She will also go in her crate when there is a thunderstorm, she gets anxious during the storm and her crate calms her down. She will go in on her own. She will also find a small spot between a bed and wall during a storm. Either one makes her much less anxious until the storm has passed.
Leash trained: This is a work in progress, and she has gotten much better on the leash. If she starts to pull she will react and calm down to a quick "heh". She will also be distracted by a squirrel or chipmunk running by, after all she was a hunting dog all her life, so she just still has that instinct... but can easily be redirected to continue her walk.
Activity level/requirements: Dottie loves running freely in a fenced in yard. When she is outside in the yard her hunting instinct takes over and she is absolutely amazing to watch. I don't think anyone ever told her she's 10 years old, because she moves like a 2 year old. However, she knows when to calm down, and will come in when you call her, we have found clapping our hands and calling her name distract her from what she's doing and she will then come to us and come inside. I don't think just long walks would be enough for her, having the freedom to run in a fenced in yard is also what she needs. When Dottie comes inside she calms right down, and settles very easily. During the day when she is inside with us she is generally laying by our side, or by the glass front door watching what's going on outside.
Fence requirements: She is now in a yard with a 4' chain link fence and has never tried to climb it, or jump it. She is fine with that height.
Personality: Dottie is a sweetheart, and just loves to be petted and loved. She will follow you if you go into another area, but will also just keep an eye on you if she's on the couch nice and comfy! She wants to see you, and be with you, but is fine if we leave her to go out. She will just settle and wait for us to return. She is gentle, affectionate and very much a love.
Health history: UTD on vaccinations, is spayed/neutered, microchipped, & on monthly heartworm preventative.Dottie did have a small mammary tumor removed which was a very low grade cancer. The vet got all of it with clean margins and her prognosis is very good. Any adopter would want to watch for any new growths in her mammary chain in the future and get them checked.
Foster comments: Dottie is a total love. I often say no one told her she's 10 years old because she truly is full of life. She adores everyone she comes in contact with and really just wants to please. She does very well in the car once she realizes she cannot come in the front seat with you:) Dottie just deserves her forever to love her the way she will love you!

Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $75.00 for the required Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI). Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000-mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000-mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Transports to far Western states, from Eastern states, may have additional restrictions.
