Meet Denny! Denny is a 2-year-old, 45lbs, male English Bulldog. Denny came to us just over two months ago with a grade 4 of 6 heart murmur. An echocardiogram revealed that Denny was born with multiple congenital heart defects, including severe pulmonic stenosis, moderate subaortic stenosis, and mild mitral and tricuspid valve dysplasia.
The most significant of these conditions is his severe pulmonic stenosis. Pulmonic stenosis occurs when the pulmonic valve, located between the right side of the heart and the lungs, is abnormally narrow. This narrowing makes it much more difficult for blood to flow from the heart to the lungs. As a result, the right side of the heart must work much harder to pump blood, causing increased pressure within the heart and thickening of the heart muscle over time. Denny's tricuspid valve, mitral valve, and the area below his aortic valve are also formed abnormally. Fortunately, these changes are considered mild compared to his severe pulmonic stenosis.
To help improve blood flow and reduce the strain on his heart, Denny underwent a balloon valvuloplasty at Purdue. We're thrilled to share that Denny's procedure was a success! His post-op echocardiogram showed approximately a 57% reduction in the pressure gradient across the pulmonic valve compared to before surgery. In simple terms, his heart no longer has to work nearly as hard to pump blood to his lungs.
Denny is currently taking heart medication and may need to remain on medication long-term. On the plus side, the medication he is on is atenolol which happens to be very affordable. A repeat echocardiogram has been recommended in 1-3 months to continue monitoring his progress and determine his long-term treatment plan.
Despite everything he has been through, Denny hasn't let his heart condition slow him down one bit!
Denny is a handsome, loving guy who has quickly become a staff favorite. He walks well on leash, is crate trained, and potty trained. He loves snuggling with his humans but is equally happy lounging in his dog bed with a toy. Speaking of toys...Denny LOVES toys. All the toys. All of the time. His future family will definitely want to keep a well-stocked toy box on hand!
Denny is currently thriving in a foster home with dogs ranging in size from 3 pounds to 130 pounds, as well as a few feline friends. He gets along wonderfully with everyone he meets.
The adoption fee is $400. This includes the neuter, heart surgery, microchip, heartworm test, wellness bloodwork, fecal flotation and all core vaccines.
If you are interested in adopting Denny, please e-mail adoptions@thelovepetproject.org with "Denny" in the subject. Please also tell us about yourself and your household.
