Are you Suni's new best friend? This affectionate cutie will keep your abs activated through constant laughter and ensure you reach your daily step goals, making the perfect companion for a fellow adventurer or fitness enthusiast. Her athletic prowess comes complete with full body hugs, kisses, ridiculous summersaults and adorable back rolls. Once an abandoned, emaciated pup who felt threatened by other dogs and humans, Suni is now a confident girl who longs to find a forever person of her own.
Sadly, Suni had a rough start to life, abandoned by not one, but at least two different "caregivers". A dog loving Good Samaritan found Suni wandering the streets of Broward County, Florida when she was about 8 months old. After doing a bit of online investigating, Suni's finder learned that she had been previously failed by humans. She was emaciated and showed signs of prior neglect, likely due to a lack of stimulation and training, a necessity for active, highly intelligent dogs like Suni. However, with lots of love, professional training, patience, and a solid routine, Suni blossomed into an incredible young pup.
Despite Suni being found as a stray, we were able to discover a ton of information about her genetic makeup, breed mix, and health indicators using Embark's Breed, DNA and Health test. Using noninvasive genetic testing developed by veterinarians in partnership with Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine, we know Suni's breed mix is comprised of approximately 37.4% Dutch Shepherd, 26.4% Belgian Malinois, 22.4% German Shepherd, and 13.8% "supermutt". Suni's adopter will receive the full 42-page summary of her Embark test results and access to her online portal where you can connect with Suni's "relatives" (of which there are many).
Given Suni's unique breed mix, she requires an experienced handler who is familiar with "working dogs" or other active, intelligent dogs. Suni is petite in stature, weighing just under 40 pounds. Don't let her smaller frame fool you, she is strong, determined, and athletic. She loves to run, go on long walks, play fetch, and goof around with her foster sister, a similarly sized dog friend. Suni has a high prey drive, so her ideal home is one without small animals or young children. She currently lives with a dog and gets along with her very well, but was initially reactive with dogs, as we suspect she was likely attacked by another dog(s) before entering our care. However, Suni has since learned to trust other pups. She has cohabitated and lived very well with another dog for many months and has spent extended periods of time at a boarding/training facility in the company of other dogs.
Suni completed a board and train program in the fall of 2025 and was fostered by the trainer for a few months following, so she knows all of the basic commands, is crate trained, house broken, and walks well on a leash with a herm sprenger collar. Suni has been exposed to a lot of different dogs and stimuli, both at the training facility and living with her foster mom in downtown St Petersburg. Suni is very comfortable with the Largo based trainer she's known since October and is boarded there when her foster is out of town. Local adopters will have the opportunity to take advantage of an Operation Liberation sponsored session with the Largo based trainer. This will be a great opportunity for you to connect with Suni's trainer and ease the transition into her new life.
Suni is a very healthy 1.5-year-old female dog who has been spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, tested negative for Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, Lyme, Heartworm (using IDEXX 4DX tests), and is 100% adorable.
