Dobby
aka “The Sock Was a Mistake” • 1.5 years old • Female • 11 lbs • Chihuahua/Dachshund mix •
Dobby has no interest in being a free elf.
She would actually like considerably less freedom.
Ideally, you will both remain inside the house.
Together.
Forever.
Dobby has been offered a sock.
She would like to exchange it for a person who will remain on the premises.
—
Dobby looks like somebody assembled a Chihuahua and a Dachshund out of spare Disney parts.
The enormous worried eyes.
The ridiculous little eyebrows.
The long feathering.
The tiny brown nose.
She looks like she is about to tell you that unfortunately there has been an incident and she will need to sit directly on your chest while the two of you process it.
This is fairly accurate.
—
Dobby is a lap dog.
Specifically, she would like your lap.
She would also like the rest of you.
Preferably at all times.
Dobby bonds hard with her person. She is extremely affectionate, playful, and happiest when she is hanging out with somebody she trusts.
She loves toys.
She plays fetch.
She is good with other dogs and good on a leash.
She is, by all accounts, an absolutely delightful little companion.
There is just one issue.
You are not allowed to leave.
—
Dobby has significant separation anxiety.
And we do mean significant.
When left alone, Dobby does not simply become bored and chew a shoe.
Dobby takes her concerns directly to the structure.
Doors.
Trim.
Walls.
Whatever she believes may stand between Dobby and the return of her person.
Crating does not help. Confinement causes her to panic and makes the situation worse.
Dobby would therefore like it formally noted that she is not looking for someone who plans to put her in a crate for eight hours and wait for her to “get used to it.”
She will not.
She has reviewed the option.
And she has declined.
—
What Dobby needs is someone whose actual daily life already accommodates her.
Someone retired.
Someone who works from home.
Someone who is genuinely home most of the time.
Someone who has always thought, “You know what would improve my life? An 11-pound emotionally unstable barnacle.”
Dobby may become more comfortable with short periods alone over time, but her new family needs to choose her for who she is right now—not who they hope she might become.
Dobby does not demand that you remain home.
Dobby demands that Dobby remain with you.
Fortunately, she LOVES car rides.
Dobby is willing to travel.
—
Dobby is also somewhat suspicious of unfamiliar people.
When somebody new comes over, she barks.
And barks.
And continues barking.
There is no reported aggression. She is scared.
But after seeing the same person several times, she eventually decides they are probably not there to repossess the house.
And once you have successfully completed orientation:
Congratulations.
You are now hers.
—
Dobby does not need everybody.
She needs the right somebody.
Someone patient with the barking.
Someone willing to continue the potty training.
Someone who understands that separation anxiety is not bad behavior or something she is doing out of spite.
And most importantly, someone who genuinely wants a dog who intends to be deeply, personally, and perhaps somewhat excessively involved in their life.
Because Dobby is not looking for a casual relationship.
She is looking for codependency.
—
If you are truly home most of the time, don’t have many random visitors, and would enjoy having a tiny shadow accompany you throughout the day, Dobby is available.
But if you routinely disappear for eight hours and believe a crate will sort the whole thing out, Dobby respectfully wishes you the best in your future endeavors.
From your home.
With somebody else.
—
Dobby has already had several homes in her short life.
She does not need another sock.
She needs somebody who stays.
