At 15 years old, Bear still has so much left to give. He's looking for a very special home with someone who sees past his disabilities and is ready to give him the care, patience, and love he deserves.
Bear is completely toothless and has IVDD, leaving him with very limited use of his back legs. He's currently making progress with laser therapy, water treadmill sessions, and daily physical therapy. His adopter should be committed to continuing his rehabilitation, including his recommended at-home exercises, to help him stay as strong and comfortable as possible. He's also learning to enjoy his wheelchair, and wed love for his new family to help him continue building confidence using it for walks and adventures.
Because of his IVDD, Bear has reduced bladder and bowel control. He always tries his best, but occasional accidents are simply part of life for him. Caring for a special needs dog comes with a little extra work, so he's looking for someone who can approach those moments with patience, compassion, and understanding.
Bear also has some separation anxiety and would do best in a home where someone is around most of the time. His ideal adopter is retired or works from home so he can enjoy the companionship he craves and stay on his therapy routine. We also think he'd love having another friendly dog around for company.
His ideal home is one without stairs, with a fenced yard (he's very curious) that provides easy access for potty breaks to help minimize accidents. Hardwood or other hard-surface floors are a huge bonus because Bear loves to scoot around the house and he's surprisingly fast!
Bear is incredibly affectionate and wants to be as close to his people as possible. He's also delightfully bossy and isn't shy about barking to let you know when he wants something, whether that's a cuddle, a snack, or your attention. He has a huge personality packed into a little body.
Yes, Bear comes with a few extra messes, a little extra work, and a commitment to his ongoing care. But he more than makes up for it with endless cuddles, unwavering love, and a personality that will keep you laughing every day. If you're willing to give a senior special-needs dog a chance, Bear will reward you with all of his love and devotion.

Rocky Mountain Dachshund Rescue (RMDR) has foster families in Colorado, Nevada, Utah, Montana, and Wyoming. Please check the dogs location before your apply to adopt them. You will need to pick them up. RMDR DOES NOT TRANSPORT THE DOG TO YOU or transport them across state lines.
The Colorado Department of Agriculture requires that all dogs entering PACFA-licensed facilities have a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) issued by an accredited veterinarian within 30 days of entry. Dogs over three months of age must also have proof of a current rabies vaccination, including the vaccination date, manufacturer, and serial number listed on the CVI. Puppies must receive parvovirus and distemper vaccinations at least 14 days before entry.

At RMDR, adoptions are not first-come, first-served—we carefully place each dog in the home that best fits their needs. Applications are usually reviewed within 48 hours. Every RMDR dog is spayed/neutered, microchipped, and current on vaccinations.
