“Cali” also known as Cali-girl, Cal-Cal, and Callie-kins is a desperate Dauschund. I’m not saying that in a “desperate” for a place to lay her head type of way, what I mean is that she has soo much love to give that she just doesn’t know what to do with herself.
She has been in her current home 4 years and was estimated to be 2 when they got her, so we guesstimate she’s around 6.
She comes from an abusive home where she was beaten regularly. Though she has some emotional scars from the past. She has not lost her spirit for fun, love or adventure. Be warned that she’ll always have a little hood in her and she is ready to throw hands if anything pops off (usually a side eye from another dog) 🫣 the pack in her current home has never really accepted her and the animosity and jealousy has shifted to a place they can not ignore for all their well-being.
Cali does not regularly sleep with, play with, eat with the other dogs. She’s always been a bit of a Lone Ranger. She needs to be in a home where she can be the center of attention, the “baby”.
She loves to go out on adventures, walks and car rides but could use some better leash manners/training. She is small but does pull. She is mostly potty trained but may have confusion as we’ve used indoor house pads for years due to predators. Cali aims to please you but instinctually she does like to potty over anyone else’s scent she finds. I think her ideal home would not have other pets or children (mostly due to jealousy issues).
Cali likes water, she’ll play in the hose and splash about. She loves car rides. Her quirk is licking glass and chewing blankets. The glass licking is cute, car windows, sliding doors.. cool, sleek surfaces. The blanket chewing is not so cute, but I hope in a home where she can be the center of attention she won’t feel the need to do that anymore, I’m certain it’s a self soothing technique for her.
She doesn’t know basic commands but is so smart and eager to please if someone spent the time to teach her, I think she would take it on fast.
She’s determined to get what she wants (she can tight rope walk baby gates), she’s pushy at doorways to get outside and explore, due to her past abuse you can’t panic or get mad if she bolts past you, you have to assure her she’s not in trouble and your not mad and going to beat her for her mistake if you want to catch her. We installed baby gates and back up doors at all point of entry/exit to our home.
I know it sounds like I’m complaining but she has the brightest personality and goes belly up and flaps her furry little paws so cute when she wants more love- which is always. She wants nothing more than to sit with someone, go places with them and be a companion.
She is a little overweight and needs her anal glands expressed often, roughly every 6 weeks. She is a long hair so some grooming is required, she does not like her toes touched. We have paid a groomer to do it. But her love is immeasurable. She kinda snorts like a pig sometimes (even before the weight gain) so if animal noises (snoring, snorting) bother you keep looking. She’s a noisy gal 😉
She’s adorable, and such a little love bug. We’re only parting with her because these issues with our pack are escalating and we realize that a big part of that is us not being able to devote enough time to Cali to satisfy her emotional needs. She needs a person, or a couple to be the center of their world.
Cali has been through a lot and we don’t want to add to her emotional baggage with abandonment issues. We will wait for the right fit for her forever home.
