DESCRIPTION

Hi, I'm Benji — and fair warning, I'm going to need a minute before I trust you. But stick around, because once I decide you're safe, I am ALL IN. When I first landed in foster care, I hid under the dining room table for two days. By day two, I was my foster mom's shadow. That's just how I work — slow to warm up, impossible to shake once I do. I LOVE walks (don't let anyone tell you different), I love napping on my person's lap, and I have opinions about my toys. I also have a fantastic side-eye that I will absolutely use on you until you've earned my trust.

My Ideal Home
Good with other dogs, older children, men, and women. Not yet tested with cats or young kids, so given how long I take to warm up to new people, a home without little ones would probably suit me best. I do best with a patient family committed to helping me keep losing weight through regular walks.

A Few Important Things to Know

Wary of strangers: I came from a difficult situation and I'm cautious with new people at first — I'll bark when someone comes in the house. Give me time to settle (mine is usually about 48 hours), and I'll come sit right next to you for pets. I do best with adopters who understand this isn't aggression, it's fear, and who are willing to let me set the pace.
Weight management: I'm significantly overweight right now. My foster family has me walking regularly and I love it, but I'll need a committed family to keep up the exercise and portion control to get me to a healthy weight.
Alopecia: I have some hair loss on my back, so you'll see fuzzy patches or bare skin there — my belly, on the other hand, is gorgeous. It's cosmetic and doesn't bother me one bit, but my forever family should be comfortable with a not-so-fuzzy dachshund.
Crate use: I do fine in a crate now, but I can be sensitive about how it's used — I do best when it's treated as my safe space, never as a punishment.

What I Bring to the Table
I'm resilient, I'm loyal, and once I know you're mine, I will follow you everywhere. My foster family has watched me go from hiding under a table to being their constant shadow in under a week — that's who I am when given patience and kindness. I just want someone who will show me that people can be gentle, keep taking me on the walks I love, and let me prove that a little time is all it takes for me to become the best, most devoted little shadow you've ever had.
