Meet Maple, a four year female discarded by a puppy mill. For a dog coming from a mill, Maple is making amazing progress. She is currently living in a country setting on a horse farm with 2 dogs. She has adapted incredibly well to living in a home and is already housetrained and doing well with leash training. Maple loves being outdoors and will run around and sniff and roll, eventually settling into a corner where she observes her new freedom and space, therefore a home with a yard is preferred. Inside however she is more nervous and will sometimes pace before she settles. She still is shy of her foster dad and will avoid him, however like most puppy mill dogs, she is incredibly gentle and despite her shyness and fears will allow you to pet her (which she seems to like) and handle her as needed. She lives with 2 calm, older dogs and seems to enjoy their presence, even cuddling in a dog bed with one of them, although has yet to engage in any play. This could come with time, however it also may not. If you are considering Maple as a second dog, you cannot have any expectations that she will turn into a playful companion to your dog. Adopting a mill dog takes a special person, one that is patient yet will use her curious nature to gently encourage her to learn and experience more. Someone that will give her confidence and guide her with zero expectations or time restrictions. Maple's ideal home would be in a quiet setting with someone that works from home or is retired and another calm, older dog to help guide her and give her security. Mill dogs are generally housed together and despite not interacting, they do find comfort in another canine companion.
There are still many things for Maple to learn, but every day we’re seeing a little more of the dog she is becoming. We will continue to update her bio so please continue to check in. Maple has seen a vet and is up to date on vaccines and will be adopted out following her spay and dental upcoming surgeries.
