CRT would like to introduce the newest—and tiniest—member of our foster family: Gilligan!
We chose his name because this sweet little guy wants to be everyone’s “Little Buddy.” Fans of Gilligan’s Island may remember that “Little Buddy” was the Skipper’s special nickname for Gilligan, and we couldn’t imagine a more fitting name for him.
At approximately four months old, Gilligan weighed just 4.5 pounds at his last veterinary visit. He is pure white with the cutest ears and a personality much bigger than his tiny frame. Both of his parents weighed around six pounds, so we expect Gilligan to remain small and reach approximately five to six pounds when fully grown.
Gilligan came to CRT after being surrendered as an unwanted puppy, but that is all behind him now. From this point forward, this special little boy will know exactly what it means to be wanted, cared for, and loved.
Fun, playful, affectionate, and full of puppy energy, Gilligan loves toys and especially enjoys romping with the other small dogs in his foster home. He will need another friendly small dog in his new home to provide companionship and help show him the ropes. Applications will not be considered where he would be an only dog. After a busy day of playing and learning, he loves cuddling up and sleeping in bed with his humans.
Gilligan is a very smart puppy who is making wonderful progress with potty training. He began using potty pads and is now learning to go outside. He has even mastered the doggy door under supervision! Because he is still young, Gilligan needs regular potty breaks and a consistent schedule.
It is important to note that Gilligan is small and therefore will always need his human nearby while he is outside (there are instances where hawks or large birds will swoop down and pick up small dogs under 5 pounds, so you will want to be there to protect Gilligan). We also want to emphasize that your fence must be very secure. Gilligan is so tiny that he can easily slip under the smallest opening in a fence, so he will need to be in a home with a solid, wooden fenced yard (no chain link, no wrought iron).
Like most puppies, Gilligan is currently in his chewing and playful mouthing phase. Because he is still learning appropriate boundaries and may use his mouth during play, we are recommending an all-adult home at this time. His new family should be prepared to provide plenty of appropriate chew toys, patience, consistent guidance, and positive reinforcement. He has not yet begun leash or harness training because of his vaccination status.
Gilligan has received his first two rounds of puppy vaccinations and is expected to complete his veterinary care in early October. He will be ready for adoption at that time, but CRT is accepting applications now. Until then, he has plenty of growing, playing, learning, and—of course—cuddling to do!
Reminder that while puppies are undeniably adorable, they also represent a long-term commitment. Small breed dogs often live 15-20 years, and we’re looking for a family that’s excited to love, guide and care for this puppy through every stage of life – from playful puppyhood to his senior years.
Welcome to CRT, Gilligan! We have a feeling this adorable Little Buddy is going to steal a lot of hearts.
