Cayenne: A Little Spice, a Lot of Sweet
5–6 months old
Despite her spicy name, Cayenne’s signature ingredients are impossibly soft fur, floppy brown ears, and a heart that melts once she knows you’re her person. Add a wildly unnecessary leap before every toy chase, and you have one very entertaining little puppy.
DPS rescued Cayenne from a hoarding situation along with 19 other dogs. They had never left the yard, walked on a leash, or lived inside a house. These sweet dogs have been learning “how to dog” one new experience at a time—and Cayenne has discovered that couch cuddles and fetch are excellent reasons to give this new life a chance.
From Under the Console to Center Stage
When Cayenne first arrived in her foster home, she tucked herself beneath the entertainment console, unsure what to make of everything around her. Within a few days, her fosters began meeting the puppy behind those worried eyes: affectionate, silly, playful, and very interested in being wherever her people were.
Now she happily plays nearby while her fosters go about their day, then scoots in as close as physically possible when it’s time to snooze. Sometimes she even settles into a lap for a nap while her foster works at a desk. Once you’ve earned her trust, you’re officially part of her cuddle collection.
Competitive Pouncing, Amateur Interior Design
Cayenne loves fetch, tug, and tossing her toys around. Her fetch technique deserves its own instant replay: first comes a dramatic hop, then a dash across the room, followed by another airborne pounce onto her unsuspecting toy. Her floppy ears provide outstanding special effects.
She’s also an inventive little treasure hunter. Given a no-hide chew, she searches for the perfect hiding place—and has recently selected her water bowl. Concealed treasure and a softened snack? Cayenne may be conducting research the rest of us aren’t ready to understand.
A Day on the Cayenne Calendar
Her morning starts around 8 a.m. with a potty break and a stroll around the apartment complex. Breakfast is a leisurely affair, with bites of food squeezed between important toy-related business. Then comes a nap, preferably with a cuddle.
Regular outings, independent play, and more naps carry her through the day. Evening is prime puppy time, with dinner around 6:30 p.m. and another round of play before her final potty break. She sleeps in a crate beside her fosters’ bed, usually protesting for several minutes before settling and sleeping quietly until morning. She also settles in her crate when her fosters leave, after a brief round of complaints.
Cayenne has made excellent progress with potty training, with no routine accidents reported since her first few days. A consistent schedule will help her carry those skills into her new home. Her wonderfully soft coat does shed regularly.
Learning That the World Is Safe
Cayenne’s confidence at home is still catching up with her confidence elsewhere. New people, unfamiliar dogs, sudden sounds, and even someone reappearing from another room can startle her and trigger barking. On walks, she generally doesn’t pull, though she’s still learning where to put her feet and often barks at people or dogs she encounters.
She lives with a dog-savvy cat and frequently tries to recruit her into puppy play. Her enthusiasm can include barking, jumping, and wanting a share of the attention, so a timid cat could find her overwhelming. She has also been nervous around another dog, particularly indoors; introductions will need to be thoughtful and gradual.
Like any teething puppy, Cayenne considers a surprising number of household objects potential chew toys. Appropriate chews, redirection, and supervision belong on her adopter’s shopping list.
Her ideal family will appreciate both the goofy puppy she already is and the reassurance she still needs. Patient adopters who can offer predictable routines, gentle introductions, and positive training will help her keep discovering that new experiences can be good ones.
Cayenne has already traded hiding beneath furniture for snuggling beside her people. With time and kindness, this sweet little spice girl has so much more joy waiting to unfold.
