STATS, OVERVIEW: Albuquerque NM!! Time is a factor for this dog due to a new baby coming. That would be the wrong stimulus for Marlene. Because of this dogs age JCLDR will gladly take an approved foster and keep her under their banner and this can be discussed if adoption is not an option for whoever wants to help her. Call Janeen and visit with her about options. Where Marlene lives she does not have the possibility of a new chance that JCLDR believes she deserves. She is a good dog in the right hands. We want to leave options on the table for this little gal and we have the expertise to work with someone and give her the rest of a good life. Marlene is an 8 year old female, appearing to be high end Catahoula, and is coming 9 on July 27th, she is spayed, up to date on vaccines, HW tested and negative and on **Tri-Heart+** preventative. She is located in Albuquerque NM and needs a new home, either foster or foster with intent to adopt or approved adopter and as soon as possible The reason for rehoming her is because the family is having their first baby and she is too reactive to children. She has never really been around children and needs some work (which we, JCLDR, can do easily with whoever takes her) on resource guarding. It has to do with anything that she considers her food or toys. This is not uncommon and can easily be handled by us once we get the patient right situation for her, but at her age and with a child coming, the family definitely needs to rehome her before the baby comes. Owners will be willing to transport her to a new screened approved loving home by car. Marlene loves to ride in the car and does pretty well. She does pretty decent at the veterinarians office and is naturally distracted by food or other dogs. She has had a muzzle used once and that was early in their ownership and she was not feeling well. Since then the veterinarians use Trazodone and Gabapentin to tone down her nervousness with strangers handling her. It is only for the prep for vet visits and when she is boarded when they leave town. She has never had shock collars used on her thankfully. She has had and been responsive to slow loving interaction from her family in the almost four years they have had her while settling her into their life. She is not a toy motivated dog like many other Catahoulas, unless there is a food reward involved. When given treats in training she is very gentle taking them out of her humans she knows hands. Marlene should go to a childless home, and we think that older teenagers that are dog respectful would be okay for her in her new environment we are seeking for her. 13 to 14 or older maybe. She is crate broken to an open wire crate, and it is her safe place so there is always that option if the family household gets to overstimulating for her with teenage stuff. She can always stay in her crate where it is not isolating her from all that is going on. Catahoulas like to be a part of the family and she is no different in that. She wants to know everyone is safe and secure, that is her job. She loves to swim and go wading in water. She is glued to her family and wants to be in with the pack, not left out as a yard dog, and she will get vocal to get the familys attention if she is left alone for too long. Again this is very normal for a loyal loving Catahoula. They are usually like Marlene, a tight pack animal. When visitors are coming and going, she definitely is alerting her family. The family guardedly keeps her on a leash for slow introductions until she gets used to the visitors and accepts them. They are being considerate of all and careful but she has never gone after company or bitten them. She has had one bite incident and please read down further for full explanation. She weighs 58 pounds so is a dog that is not yet even close to being a senior. She is good with other dogs once slow introductions off leash are initiated properly. The family keeps her on leash always with **unknown** dog interactions. They are cautious. She has never gone after another dog but is shy and not very confident. She has never injured another. We would say no to small dogs or animals or cats in the home because she has normal Catahoula prey drive definitely. On leash she is a leash puller but does well with a nylon martingale. She is controllable.This is not uncommon in Catahoulas. They have curiosity and hunting in new territory drive. On leash she might feel trapped when encountering a new dog so can be a little leash reactive. It depends on the dog and on the situation. She is easily distracted and refocused on her owner and away from the encounter that has made her nervous. Again her new owner can instill confidence and leadership and she will respond to that.
HISTORY: The family adopted Marlene from the humane society when she was 5 years old. They have had her ever since. They knew nothing about her background, she came in as a stray. The family is struggling with giving her up but it seems in the best interest of all.
GOOD: Please note as stated above that she is gentle with treat training from her owners hands. There has been no biting with training and taking treats as rewards. She is really good about cuddling and she loves to snuggle.
BAD: If food is spilled and someone gets after her and tries to get her away from it, that is when she guards it and says.. it is mine. We can work on that..JCLDR can help her overcome this with cooperation and time and proper professional help. We do not want to see her forced by a trainer and with devices. She would not do well with that and it would in fact take away her trust. JCLDR deals with this and is willing to help. It is not just food but it is anything she considers hers and her high end resource. She did bite one person. It was a friend who was watching her when the family was out of town. The friend came to tend her in her own territory at the owners house. The friend spilled a bag of candy and Marlene got to the candy and the friend went in and grabbed the candy away forcefully from Marlene and she reacted. She did draw blood but more of a puncture wound, it was not aggressive but possessive and there were no stitches. Marlene was not put in quarantine.
UGLY: There is nothing really aggressive about this dog but she is unsure and unsettled sometimes in her possessive desire to keep what she feels belongs to her. She just needs work, game playing and trades and heavy leadership but no force and she needs no little ones or people pushing and forcing her to teach her her boundaries.
