Axel — A Big, Goofy Heart on Four Paws

Axel is a 2–4 year-old, 79-pound black Labrador Retriever. He is neutered and up to date on vaccinations.

According to his foster family, Axel is a couch potato at heart, perfectly content to curl up beside his people or his canine friends. But when it’s time to play, he has plenty of energy to burn and would love a large fenced yard where he can run, explore, and have some fun. He’s recently discovered toys and has decided that ropes are absolutely the best!

Axel is wonderful with other dogs and loves having canine companions. He enjoys playing with his foster sisters, a Lab and a Lab mix, and is especially fond of snuggling on the couch with his foster brother, Frankie, a Dachshund. When playtime is over, Axel is more than happy to find a comfy spot and relax.

He absolutely adores his foster human siblings, ages 7, 10, and 12. Axel likes to keep tabs on everyone, checking that the kids are where they should be and making his rounds to check on Mom and Dad, too. He’s also been around sheep, donkeys, a horse, and chickens. He listens when corrected around livestock, although chickens outside their pen can look an awful lot like toys! Because of his interest in small animals, a home without kittens would likely be best. Cats themselves don’t seem to bother him.

Axel walks well on a leash and has good manners when greeting people—he doesn’t jump up when his family comes home. Like many Labs, though, Axel has discovered that his big paws can be quite useful when there might be a snack involved! He is working on keeping those paws off the counters and out of cabinets. He also prefers to enjoy his meals without sharing with his canine sisters, although he has shown no food aggression toward people.

Axel has been through quite a lot, including a long road to overcome heartworms and gain some much-needed weight. Thankfully, he is doing well and continuing to thrive. He can be sensitive to loud noises like lawn mowers and fireworks, so a calm, understanding home would be ideal.

At the end of the day, Axel is simply a big, goofy, affectionate boy who loves his people and his dog friends. He has come a long way, and his foster family knows that the best part of his story is still ahead. Axel is ready to find the forever family where he can finally settle in, stretch out on the couch, and be loved exactly as much as he loves.
